The Definitive Moment?

If you have followed baseball, more specifically, Dodgers baseball, for any period of time, you have had the pleasure (and occasional anguish) of witnessing some of the game’s greatest and most historic moments. I mean, what true Dodgers fan will ever forget Kirk Gibson‘s “impossible” World Series-winning walk-off home run in 1988, or Steve Finley‘s dramatic walk-off grand slam on October 2, 2004 to beat the San Francisco Giants to win the National League West Division?

Well, they did it again.

On Tuesday night in front of a sold-out Dodger Stadium crowd of 47,069, Dodgers center fielder James Outman hit a 10th-inning, one-out, bases loaded double off the wall in right field to give Dodgers manager Dave Roberts‘ team yet another dramatic 8-7 walk-off win over the Toronto Blue Jays, prompting former Dodgers great and currant AM 570 LA Sports broadcaster Rick Monday to say: “This may be the definitive moment of what this team can do.”

Outman missed a dramatic walk-off grand slam by inches on Tuesday night. Instead, he had to settle for a dramatic walk-off double. (SportsNet LA)

“His at-bats all night long were great,” Roberts said postgame of Outman’s dramatic walk-off double. “A young player taking walks, and then when he gets an opportunity with the ball in the strike zone, to put good swings on it, he’s just grown up pretty quickly, and the last few weeks has been really telling.”

Was this indeed “the definitive moment” of the Dodgers 2023 season?

Stay tuned…

A team’s definitive moment is usually viewed through the rear view mirror of a completed season, but this certainly was a game to be included when reflecting back. But, mark this game down as the day James Outman transitioned from struggling prospect to legit ML ball player. We Dodgers fans have watched over the years as highly regarded prospects start off strong, but then unable (or unwilling) to make adjustments when ML teams exploit their weaknesses. Outman is different, it has taken awhile, but he has worked hard to make adjustments offensively and defensively to the point where he IS the Dodgers regular centerfielder.

Wow!! What a game. Glad I stayed up for the whole game.
Sure hope they let Outman play CF full time. Platoon Kike, Deluca, and Taylor with Heyward and Peralta on the corners. Move Mookie to SS or 2B. Hope Deluca is OK. I would like to see him back. Not really all that excited for Thompson to return.

You’re a better man than me — three hour time difference, I fell asleep in 8th inning. Woke up after game was over and checked Dodgers website to see what I missed. Thompson has never been one of my favorite Dodgers, but Roberts misused him as a platoon player against LH pitching — something in which Thompson has never excelled. Thompson is a huge reverse splits guy, they would have to use him like he was a LH hitter but that isn’t going to happen unless team trades Peralta.

Afternoon naps are a wonderful thing. Yeah, I don’t get why they kept running Thompson out there against lefties. I’d like to see Trayce traded someplace he can get more playing time and a fresh start. Worked wonders for Bellinger.

Tremendous win. I was worried about a third consecutive loss. I only made it to the 7th, recorded it watched this morning.
    Great win.

  4. Stevenbendodger says:

Dodgers just traded for Ahmed Rosario to help at SS.

He will go 5-1 with a 3.20 era LoL

    Now for some pitching help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Angels got Giolito for 2 players and 2 prospects. I think we are targeting the Cardinals for either Flaherty or Montgomery.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Strong move by Angels giving up a couple of good (not great) prospects for what they desperately need – pitching. Moreno not done as he attempts to prove that Ohtani should stay in Anaheim rather than leave via free agency

    • Jesse Pearce says:

A trade with Cardinals makes sense, Dodgers could even trade for both Flaherty and Montgomery if they send Gonsolin to St. Louis. I think Gonsolin needs a fresh start with another team. Whether the pressure of pitching for Dodgers, or he just lacks the bull dog mentality, he needs to pitch elsewhere — if not now, then before the 2024 season.

    I hear ya.

Pitching prospects and the Mets send us
    15 mil for next yr.

Kirk Gibsons HR may not only be the Dodgers definitive moment, might be baseball’s definitive moment.
And this is coming from a lifelong Yankee fan. Greatest thing I’ve ever seen on a baseball diamond.
