Dodgers Acquire Rosario, Trade Syndergaard

The Dodgers have acquired infielder/outfielder Amed Rosario from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard and cash considerations.

Rosario, 27, appeared in 94 games for the Guardians, hitting .265 (102-for-385) with 19 doubles, three homers and 40 RBI. He has been with the Guardians three seasons, slashing a combined .278/.314/.397 with 25 homers and 168 RBI. He has been in the Majors parts of seven seasons with New York (2017-20) and Cleveland (2021-23), batting a combined .273 with 57 homers and 316 RBI in 791 games. He was originally signed as an international free agent on July 2, 2012 by the New York Mets.

Although Rosario is hitting .265 in the 94 games in which he appeared with Cleveland this season, he is 33-for-109 (.303) against lefties. (Cleveland.com)

Syndergaard, 30, was 1-4 with a 7.16 ERA (44 ER/55.1 IP) and 38 strikeouts in 12 starts for the Dodgers this season. He is in his eighth Major League season and he is a combined 58-45 with a 3.65 ERA (368 ER/908.0 IP) and 910 strikeouts in 158 career Major League games. He was signed by the Dodgers on December 16, 2022.

  1. Jesse Pearce says:

Concerning that Rosario’s SS defense this season has been awful. At his best he is an average defender, but this year he has absolutely cratered.

  2. Larry Polak says:

Even though he’s been down, he’s still much better than Rojas. What we’d lose in the field, we’d make up for with the bat. He can really hit left handers which the Dodgers desperately need.

    • Ron Cervenka says:

I believe that the Dodgers coaching staff will significantly help Rosario’s defense. They are very good at what they do.

      • Jesse Pearce says:

That has to be their thinking since Rosario is currently rated the worst fielding shortstop in MLB who is qualified for batting title. More than half of his errors are throwing errors — having Freddie at first base should help with that problem.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

According to Fangraphs WAR, Rojas and Rosario are a push — both with -0.1 WAR. Rojas is by far the superior defensive player, Rosaro the better offensive player.

    Positioning, Scorer, many variables!!!!

But a 300 average against lefties.

I was thrilled when the Dodgers got Rojas but JP warned me that he had a significant drop off offensively the last 2 seasons. He was right.

The next moves will be the important ones.

1-we need a starting pitcher. Would love Verlander. have to pay somebody next yr. Julio or verlander for 1 yr. I would take Verlander.
2-I just dont want Dodgers to sign Ohtani for mega mega long term bucks.
3-hopefully CK and Pepiot are back in the next 2 weeks. Miller is fine.
    need some help.

JP Gonsolin and one of the young arms for Verlander. Then trade for Montgomery or Flaherty.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

I cannot get over the Houston Astros cheating and Verlander was so darn arrogant when responding to questions. So my bias says — never a Dodger even if Mets pay his entire contract and accept Alex Vesia in return.

Regarding stats — you could be right about the variables, but Guardians fans comments were worse than the stats on Rosario. Change of team and coaching may straighten him out, but he has never been more than an average fielding shortstop.

I agree 1000% on Ohtani. What makes him so great makes has the potential of being a huge liability — if injured you lose your top hitter and pitcher.

There are several pitchers for whom I would trade Gonsolin and a pitching prospect. Both of the Cardinals rentals (Flaherty and Montgomery), White Sox Cease, Pirates Keller to name a few

Last night’s game was blacked out in my area, listened via XM radio. Rosario credited with a couple of nice fielding plays and couple of hits. Watched recap this morning; Rosario looked solid hitting. There is something special – perhaps magical – when players put on Dodgers uniform.
