Unacceptable

Despite losing consecutive games to their division rival Arizona Diamondbacks, the Dodgers maintained their respectable and acceptable 7.0-game lead over the NL West second place San Diego Padres, an 8.0-game lead over the tied-for-third-place San Francisco Giants and Dbacks, and a 15.0-game lead over the NL West last place Colorado Rockies.

But what isn’t respectable or acceptable is going a combined 12-for-65 (.185), a combined 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position (.111), and leaving a combined 12 runners on base in those consecutive Dodgers losses.

“You know, I don’t have the answer. I think ahh… you know… we ahh… we had a couple situational opportunities that we just didn’t cash in on,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts answered, when asked postgame about his team’s inability to execute with runners on base and in scoring position.

“You know, I don’t have the answer,” answered the guy who is supposed to have the answer.

Of the Dodgers six total hits on Wednesday, two were doubles, one each by shortstop Mookie Betts with one out and the bases empty in the bottom of the third, and the other by second baseman Gavin Lux with one out and left fielder Teoscar Hernández on first base, having walked. Unfortunately, Hernández was left stranded on third base, as left fielder Andy Pages struck out, and right fielder Jason Heyward grounded out to first to end the inning. That was as good as it would get for the Dodgers.

Betts’ third inning double to left field was his 12th of the season.

The Dodgers have Thursday off, as they travel to Cincinnati to open a three-game series with the Reds at Great American Ball Park, followed by three against the Mets at Citi Field.

Needless to say, Thursday’s off-day is very much welcomed by the Dodgers.

and Dodgers fans.

Play Ball!

Our situational hitting is abysmal. It doesn’t matter what the count is or what the score is, they just continue to swing for the fence. We don’t bunt or hit and run. We rarely get productive outs moving runners up a base with an out because we strike out so much. It is hard to watch sometimes. The last two games were painful to watch. If some things don’t change going forward, I won’t be surprised with another early exit from the playoffs.

What ever happened to “Get ’em on, get ’em over, get ’em in?” Tommy is rolling over in his grave.

The Dodgers have pretty much been stuck in this situational approach since 2019. It’s all or nothing! Swing for the fences/home run or strike out. I to am so frustrated by their inability to get runners home. The bottom of the order is where I have a problem with the Dodgers. Look at the players, Taylor, Barnes. Kike Hernandez, Muncy & Lux. IMO, A. Friedman has failed to build up this part of the lineup! If Friedman doesn’t address this by the trade deadline, it will be ANOTHER very disappointing playoffs for the Dodgers and Friedman, Roberts and the players shaking their heads, saying how disappointed, frustrated and at a loss how to explain how it happened again.
Sound familiar? Just like the bottom of the lineup? Just like their approach to hitting with men in scoring position?
