California Love?

It was reported on Wednesday afternoon that the Boston Red Sox were looking to trim their projected 2024 payroll in order to make room for some new pieces, which could include offering up former Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen, who has one year (and $16 million) remaining on his current two-year/$32 million contract with Boston.

Jansen posted a 3-6 record and 3.63 ERA with the Red Sox in 2023. He did, however, convert 29 of his 33 save opportunities and was named to his fourth All-Star game. (Julio Cortez)

But here’s the thing. The one-time huge Dodgers fan-favorite and Willemstad, Curacao native turned 36 years old on September 30, which could make moving the four-time All-Star and two-time Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year a bit difficult for John W. Henry‘s team.

That said, Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman has made it abundantly clear that he is still looking to add some additional bullpen help for 2024, and Jansen probably still has some gas in the tank.

Might there still be some California Love out there?

    Oh please NO!!!! Resign Brasier.

Unfortunately I don’t think KJ has the nostaglic significance of Kershaw. $16MM AND prospects?! That’s not a Friedman type move. If they really want to trade for another reliever Clase from Cleveland would cost more prospects, but be much cheaper and better. Bullpens are so fungible, it doesn’t seem urgent to me to add more now. Hurt or Troncoso could be beasts on the cheap. Why ot give them a chance early in the season when/if there is an injury.

  4. Ron Cervenka says:

My guess is that Friedman spent VERY little time and consideration on this one – if any.

We all love Kenley, but his best days are clearly behind him. He could retire today with tremendous pride.

I know we need bullpen help but not Kenley. Ther we are others out there resign Braiser

  8. Rob White says:

Jansen may have been a fan favorite. But his ability to blow saves still lingers. I say the Dodgers pass on him.

  9. Redlands Dodger says:

If there is a prospect in the Red Sox organization that the Dodgers are interested in, then that player could be added to sweeten the deal to take on Kenley. Otherwise, no.

What a mistake anyone but please… LA gave him plenty of chances. Too many…
