Dodgers Opening Day Starting Rotation Set

With pitchers and catchers scheduled to report for Spring Training 2024 in exactly 10 days, the Dodgers reported on Monday that they had finalized their deal with 35-year-old left-hander James Paxton on a one-year/$11 million deal that includes a $3 million signing bonus.

The Ladner, Canada native and first round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 out of the University of Kentucky will also receive a $1 million “roster bonus” if he begins the 2024 regular season on the Dodgers Opening Day roster, or $500,000 if he starts it on the injured list but returns by April 15.

Paxton spent five seasons with the Seattle Mariners, two with the New York Yankees, and the last two with the Boston Red Sox. However, he finished the 2023 season on the injured list with right knee inflammation, hence that …if he starts the year on the injured list but returns by April 15 thing in his Scott Boras-crafted deal with the Dodgers.

Despite finishing last season on the IL, Paxton posted a respectable 7-5 record with a 4.50 ERA in the 19 games in which he appeared, all starts. Along the way, he struck out 101, walked 33, and allowed 18 home runs to the 411 batters he faced.

If Paxton is indeed ready on Opening Day (as he is expected to be), he will join a projected Dodgers Opening Day starting rotation of Walker Buehler, Bobby Miller, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow.

That said, it’s hard to believe that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman has put away his 2024 shopping cart just yet.

Stay tuned…

Fix “ he will join a projected Dodgers Opening Day starting rotation of Walker Buehler, Bobby Miller, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Bobby Miller.”

I think this is a solid move for the roation. Paxton definitely has upside. I’m not completely certain, but he might be QO eligible after the season too. Hopefully he and Teoscar have solid seasons and get QO’s. They’d either be back for 2025 on fairly low risk 1 year deals, or leave and net LAD more draft picks. Let’s Go Dodgers!

I don’t think Walker is going to start the season in the rotation. If he does that’s great but we need to keep focus on the end game. I hope we run a 6-man rotation for most of the year. We can use Sheehan and our Minor League guys to keep this team fresh. It will be important for these arms to be strong late, not early. It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch. Can’t wait.

  4. Stan C says:

I think starting Bobby Miller 2x every 5 days may burn him out… or… welcome your 1894 Brooklyn TrolleyDodgers starting rotation 😉

  5. Michael says:

I think Bobby Miller listed twice was a mistake and Tyler Glasnow was left off.

  6. Therook2525 says:

    You left out Glasnow

  7. Bobby Logan says:

You wrote Bobby Miller twice and failed to put in Tyler Glasnow.

    So there!

And they pay Othieanni to do what????

    • Andrew Pantoja says:

He’s going to DH this year and will enter the starting rotation next year. Any and all Dodgers fans should know this…

miller will have a few growing pains but his stuff is so good that he will get through it just fine. Buehler if not babies too much will be a Cyoung candidate once again. Yamamoto is a stud and will also be a candidate for the CY. Now Glasnow is a huge ???? He has never completed a full season and the best season he ever had was last year 10-7 with 120 innings pitched. They call him an elite starting pitcher, based on his Career stats they must have really lowered the standards. Pretty average to me. I would rather have Pepiot he was a beast last year when he came back from injury. He was almost un hittable. Now Paxton will be just fine and might even surprise us all.
