Old Friend Alert

It’s no secret that the Dodgers are very much in need of pitching help this off-season, especially starting pitching.

It’s also no secret that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman has a history of signing (or re-signing) veteran (old) pitchers often overlooked by other teams, a few who actually worked out well for the Dodgers. (Others, not so much).

One such guy who may have potentially been on Friedman’s re-signing radar this off-season is 35-year-old right-hander Kenta Maeda.

Make that was potentially on Friedman’s re-signing radar this off-season.

On Sunday evening, it was being widely reported on social media that the Senboku-gun, Japan native and former Dodger had signed a two-year/$24 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.

What makes this signing interesting (and newsworthy) is that only hours earlier, it had been reported that the Milwaukee Brewers were nearing a deal with the veteran right-hander and his agent Scott Boras, the man affectionately known as and often referred to as “The Baseball Antichrist.” And as we have all come to know, any deal involving a Scott Boras client ‘…ain’t over ’til it’s over.’

In his four seasons in Los Angeles (2016-2019), the extremely popular right-hander posted a respectable 47-35 record with an equally respectable 3.75 ERA in his 137 appearances (103 starts) in Dodger Blue. Along the way, he struck out 641 opposing batters and walked 178, while serving up 77 long balls in his combined 589.0 innings pitched as a Dodger.

Did Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers miss out on re-signing the (now) 35-year-old popular former Dodger?

Stay tuned…

  1. Scott Boras is always being vilified. I have been to his facility and he has showed me that he keeps statistics on every game, every night, for years now and has compiled the statistics to compare to Major League baseball team statistics. He compares his clients to others and what they are being paid. He does such a thorough job that his negotiations are statistically and logically based. Remember, nobody has to buy his clients, but after his representation of the stated facts and statistics, his clients are worthy of their hire.
