There is no disputing that 29-year-old Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani is the best overall player in the game today and considered by many to be the Babe Ruth of our generation – i.e., a great hitter and a great pitcher.
Was.
Late Thursday night, it was widely reported on social media that the extremely popular Oshu, Japan native, who was signed as a free agent by the Angels on December 9, 2017, and will be a free agent again at the conclusion of this season, has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and that he will not pitch again this season … or possibly ever.
Needless to say, and meaning no disrespect whatsoever to The New Babe, the timing of this announcement couldn’t have come at a better time, as it is very well known by Dodgers (and baseball) fans around the world that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman has been in serious discussions with Angels owner Arte Moreno about possibly signing Ohtani to what would have been the single largest and possibly longest contract in MLB history.
In a word, and again meaning no disrespect whatsoever to The New Babe – Phew!
Play Ball!

The type of injury I feared when the rumors were flying around about the Dodgers packaging a significant group of prospects for Ohtani trade, or a massive AAV and total $ FA signing. Best wishes to Ohtani for full and swift recovery, but that Buyer Beware sign is now even larger and comes with an exclamation point.
Feel bad for the guy. He probably just lost 200 million. Will still get 30 mil.
Dodgers will pass on him.
PS the best deals are the ones you don’t make.
Well, all the 10-12 year, +$500M-600M talk can stop.
Yes indeed. Right now, he isn’t worth as much as Mike Trout or Aaron Judge. I wouldn’t trade Freddie Freeman or Mookie Betts for Ohtani as a DH
