Multiple Choice Roster Questions

Remember your days in school and the instructor would announce that the test would be multiple choice answers that were viewed by many as multiple guesses. Before the Dodgers play their first Cactus League game of 2023, let’s consider a few roster questions with their respective multiple choice answers.

If either catcher, Austin Barnes or Will Smith, is placed on the IL for an extended period, which catcher will the Dodgers promote to the active roster?

  1. The team’s top prospect, Diego Cartaya.
  2. One of the current Minor League journeymen catchers: David Freitas, Hamlet Marte, or Patrick Mazelka.
  3. Minor League catching prospects Hunter Feduccia, or Carson Taylor.
  4. None of the above, the team will trade for another catcher.

Who will be the Dodgers fifth starter when the 2023 regular season begins?

  1. Dustin May
  2. Bobby Miller
  3. Jimmy Nelson
  4. Ryan Pepiot
  5. Gavin Stone
It defies all logic and common sense to think that 25-year-old right-hander Dustin will not be the in the Dodgers Opening Day starting rotation. (Jon SooHoo)

Which reliever will be designated the Dodgers closer at the start of the regular season?

  1. Brusdar Graterol
  2. Daniel Hudson
  3. Evan Phillips
  4. Alex Vesia
  5. None of the above, Dodgers will close by committee to start the season

Who will be the Dodgers starting second baseman on opening day 2023?

  1. Michael Busch
  2. Gavin Lux
  3. Miguel Rojas
  4. Chris Taylor
  5. Miguel Vargas

Which player will be the Dodgers regular center fielder in 2023?

  1. Jason Heyward (NRI – would be added to roster)
  2. James Outman
  3. Chris Taylor
  4. Trayce Thompson
  5. They will platoon Taylor or Thompson with Heyward or Outman
  6. They will trade for a centerfielder
Outfielder James Outman has nothing left to prove at the Minor League level. But will he break camp on the Dodgers Major League roster? (Ross D. Franklin)

Who will platoon with David Peralta in left field?

  1. Chris Taylor
  2. Trayce Thompson
  3. Miguel Vargas
  4. Luke Williams (NRI – would be added to roster)

We should revisit this quiz in late March before opening day.

I like it! Will make on calendar to revisit before first regular season game.

    • Quintediese says:

Isn’t Thor already starter no.4 (or if he’s no. 5 Dustin May is no. 4…)
Urias, Kershaw, Gonsolin Thor & May. I think that the best question is who will be the 6th starter once one of the original 5 inevitably gets injured.

  2. Quintediese says:

Of course, most of thses propositions are conditional upon what happens in th next few weeks in spring training. If Cartaya blows everyone away (i.e. makes them feel that he won’t miss anything if he skips AAA)while Smith and Barnes are away at the Baseball World Cup, then it will be him. (Especially since he is already on the 40 man.).

Vargas has been announced as the 2nd baseman…so there isn’t much guesswork involved here. BUT if there were no doubts, then they wouldn’t have traded for Rojas… It’s Vargas for now, but Rojas (and CT3)is waiting in the wings for the slightest problem to arise.

CF?? the big question. J-Hey has his past as a Gold Glove outfielder but as a right fielder. has he ever played CF? I would bet that they won’t be able to settle this question in spring training and that a platoon will be the solution for the beginning of the year. If Outman is able to dazzle on defense during Spring training, that might make up some minds…
    CT3 is the easy solution…

LF is also a grab-bag. CT3 and David Peralta both have to get playing time there. What will they do if Vargas isn’t capable of manning 2B?

Injuries will certainly solve 1 or 2 of these questions. It’s great to have lots of options. Have there ever been so many players counting on playing time?

my question to you is why did you number the answers but provide lettered predictions? (just clowning you sir)
my answers are 11545 and 5 (all three)
i expect taylor, thompson and outman will all see time in LF and CF as needed.
