That Inning

After experiencing the highest of highs following the Dodgers 11-2 pounding of the Atlanta Braves in Game-5 of the 2021 National League Championship Series at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night (aka: ‘The Chris Taylor game’), Dodger fans experienced the lowest of lows following Saturday night’s devastating 4-2 loss to the Braves in Game-6 at Truist Field; thereby ending the Dodgers season and their hopes for a “Repeat LA.”

Instead, Dodger fans must now suffer through a painfully long off-season while reflecting on that inning.

That inning, of course, was the top of the seventh, which played out like this:

Although it might be a bit harsh or unfair to blame Messrs. Albert Pujols, Steven Souza Jr., and Mookie Betts for striking out to bring an abrupt end to the Dodgers only real threat of the night in the single biggest game of the 2021 season, to have the tying runs in scoring position with no outs and be struck out by Braves left-hander Tyler Matzek – in order – will haunt Dodger fans for a very long time.

Steven Souza Jr. taking this pitch for a called strike three with the tying runs in scoring position is inexcusable. (Video capture courtesy of TBS Sports)

There were other missed opportunities during Saturday’s painful season-ending game, as the Dodgers (yet again) left five men on base and went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. But days, weeks, months, and perhaps even years from now, a good many Dodger fans will never forget that inning.

  1. At the time I was glad that the Dodgers did score, at least, one run, to make the score 4-2. Now of course, I agree. It was horrible.

  2. Stevebendodger says:

That’s why 2nd and third nobody out infield back I always preferred a contact hitter up vs a big power bat like Pujols.
Give me Brett Butler former dodger.
Hit a ground ball to first. Belly scores Pollock to third.
Davey Lopes Bill Russell flies out to LF Pollock scores. Tie game.
