Dodgers Place Cody Bellinger on IL

The Dodgers have placed infielder/outfielder Cody Bellinger on the injured list with a left rib fracture (retroactive to September 18) and have recalled outfielder Luke Raley from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Bellinger, 26, returns to the injured list for the third time this season. He appeared in 89 games this year with an un-Bellinger-like .159 batting average with nine doubles, nine home runs and 34 RBI. The 2019 National League MVP has been with the Dodgers five seasons with a combined .257 batting average that includes 107 doubles, 132 home runs and 352 RBI. The 2017 National League Rookie of the Year was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ.

Raley, 27, returns for his sixth stint with the Dodgers and has appeared in 30 games this season for the Dodgers. He is batting .169 on the season with one home run and two RBI. He has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he hit .295 (75-for-254) with 14 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 66 RBI in 67 games. He has spent parts of five seasons in the minor leagues with a combined .289 MiLB batting average, 64 home runs and 244 RBI in 414 games. He was acquired by the Dodgers on February 10, 2020 along with right-hander Brusdar Graterol from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for right-hander Kenta Maeda and minor league catcher Jair Camargo.

Bellinger suffered the injury on September 13 when he collided with fellow outfielder Gavin Lux. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts initially told reporters that it was not an IL situation. In fact, he appeared in three games after the injury, but went 1-for 12 (.083) in those three games, with his one hit being a single.

To his credit, Bellinger stayed off the Injured List for over a week. But the mere thought of swinging a bat with a non-displaced rib fracture brings tears to one’s eyes. (Photo credit – Keith Birmingham

Bellinger was initially scheduled to start in center field in Tuesday’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, but was a late scratch, with Mookie Betts replacing him in center and Raley inserted in right field.

I am familiar with that old saying, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how it has anything whatsoever to do with this information-only piece which, as noted, was provided to us by Dodgers PR.

If I am missing something here, please enlighten me.
