Jake Reed to Make Dodgers Debut … Again

It was short but not so sweet.

On Tuesday night, 28-year-old right-hander Jake Reed, who had been called up to the Dodgers just hours before from Triple-A Oklahoma City, made his major league debut, albeit for only two-thirds of an inning.

It did not end well for the Tucson, AZ native and fifth-round draft pick in 2014 by Minnesota Twins out of the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Although 15 of Reeds 22 pitches were strikes, he allowed one run on three hits with one walk and was ultimately charged with a blown save and the eventual 2-1 extra-inning nightmare loss to the Miami Marlins at what is now called LoanDepot Park (formerly Marlins Park); a game that the Dodgers absolutely positively should have won. Reed did, however, record his first major league strikeout – that of Miami Marlins right fielder Garrett Cooper – so there’s that.

During his seven-year minor league career, Reed appeared in 233 games, having started two of them. He arrived in the Dodgers clubhouse on Tuesday afternoon with a combined minor league record of 19-14 and 3.73 ERA. However, of those 233 minor league games, nine were with the Oklahoma City Dodgers this season – all in relief – in which he had no record but an impressive 2.61 ERA, with 11 strikeouts and only one walk over his 10.1 innings pitched for OKC.

“It was awesome,” Reed said of his major league debut. “It’s been incredible and I’m just so thankful and blessed to be here and in this uniform. For me, it’s been a really really great day.”

Make that two days.

On Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that Reed would be the ‘opener’ in Wednesday’s ‘bullpen game’ against those same Miami Marlins.

“I think for Jake it’s a good front for him,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters of his decision to have Reed as his opener on Wednesday. “He had an inning to pitch and to get him back in there, and we’ve got some other guys to take on the bulk and kind of piece the game together.”

Roberts added that Reed will most likely face only four batters.

Talk about going from the frying pan into the fire.

Welcome to The Bigs, Jake!
