Forecasting Dodgers Team Awards

The Dodgers have played 42-games of the abbreviated 60-game, 2020 MLB season, winning almost three games of every four played. Clearly, they are one of the best teams this season, and the Las Vegas betting favorite to win the World Series. A great deal can happen in the remaining three weeks leading up to the postseason tournament, but several Dodgers awards seem assured:

MVP: Mookie Betts

Slashing .316/.393/.625/1.018; 13-home runs and 31 RBI; leads all MLB players with 3.0 WAR. Until you watch him play every day, it is impossible to fully appreciate his enormous 5-tool talent, baseball IQ, and leadership. Maybe the National League MVP; he is already a Most Valuable Person.

This one is a given. Betts is the Dodgers – if not MLB’s – MVP.

Best Pitcher: Clayton Kershaw

Back to the Future for one of Dodgers GOAT pitchers, as he is pitching as well as ever. Five wins in six decisions; 1.50 ERA; 0.79 WHIP; averaging 10.25 strikeouts for every nine innings pitched; batting average against (BAA) .157. A fourth Cy Young award in 2020?

Ditto for Kershaw as their Best Pitcher.

Comeback Player: Corey Seager

Technically, he was back in 2019, but that was his warm-up for 2020. Slashing .336/.382/.643/1.025 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI; Leads all of MLB hitters in percentage of pitches barreled per plate appearance; averaging 93.8 mph exit velocity, sixth in MLB.

If he continues doing what he has done over the past three weeks, Seager could give Betts a run for his money as the team’s MVP. (Photo credit – Marcio Jose Sanchez)

Rookie of Year: Tony Gonsolin

0.76 ERA; 0.72 WHIP; BAA .150. Fellow rookie Dustin May is terrific, but Gonsolin has been better this season.

Honorable Mention

  • Corey Seager – MVP
  • Walker Buehler – Best pitcher: 3.60 ERA; 0.97 WHIP; .173 BAA; 10.2 strikeouts every nine innings.
  • Dustin May – ROY: 2.88 ERA; 1.11 WHIP; .232 BAA.
  • Will Smith – No specific category, but a .246/.397/.590/.988 slash line and the third-highest average exit velocity in MLB (94.1 mph) with six home runs in 78 plate appearances deserve recognition. (Smith does not have enough plate appearances to qualify as an MLB batting leader)

  1. It looks like the Dodgers will make the post season again this year. Nothing else is guaranteed, so far.

  2. SoCalBum says:

No category for Justin Turner, but when he is not in the lineup this team suffers, both offensively and defensively. Turner turns the lineup into an offensive juggernaut, and Muncy’s defense at third base is a huge step down from JT. No category for that, but I would say JT is indispensable.

    • Ron Cervenka says:

JT’s age and subsequent health are always a concern for me, but as you noted, he is a far superior third baseman than are Muncy or Rios.

Although the Colorado runners would have more than likely been safe at first regardless of who was at the Hot Corner on Sunday night, Muncy not even attempting several throws proves just how valuable Turner is at 3B; not to mention his value to the team as their unofficial team captain.

  3. baseball1439 says:

Think I’ll go with Seager for MVP, I have a list of three for my biggest disappointing player.
    Bellinger
    Muncy
    Urias

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Seager’s offense is right there with Betts; for MVP Betts Gold Glove defense and leadership were the deciding factors for me. Good call on disappointing players. I would also add Pederson and Hernandez to that list, both have been playing as though disinterested, counting down the days until they will be ex-Dodgers.

  4. baseball1439 says:

Gold glove and leadership are very good deciding factors. This year Pederson and Hernandez for me are not disappointing, just playing like they do most of the time.

  5. Stevebendodger says:

    This time around

The only award that matters is World Champions 2020!
