A Recipe for Disaster

Make no mistake about it, everyone misses baseball – the players, the coaches, the trainers, the owners, the stadium employees and, of course, the fans.

But there is something else that everyone cannot – and better not – be mistaken about: Not only is the COVID-19 coronavirus extremely contagious of the likes that we, the human race, have never seen before, it is also deadly.

Late Friday afternoon, it was being widely reported on social media that Major League Baseball (i.e., MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and the MLB Players Association), were seriously considering beginning the already-delayed 2020 MLB season at the teams’ respective fan-less Spring Training facilities in both the Cactus League in Arizona and the Grapefruit League in Florida.

Four words (five if you include the obvious expletive): Are You Kidding Me?

All it would take is for one infected person to show up at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ and within two weeks you could potentially have hundreds. (Photo credit – Tim Roberts)

We all want baseball to start, that’s a given. But let’s be (very) real here … thousands of people around the world are dying every day from this thing. It is the worst pandemic the planet has seen in centuries … and the worst has yet to come. Putting the players, grounds crews and other stadium employees directly in the line of fire of this thing is pure insanity – period.

If I’m Clayton Kershaw with a wife, two young children and a newborn safely at home in Dallas, TX, there is no way I would agree to such a ludicrous and potentially deadly plan. This is just plain NUTS!

Dear God, please let common sense prevail here. This is, hands down, an absolute recipe for disaster.

I couldn’t agree more. This WAY to dangerous.
We have ER docs/nurses dying from this virus.
Scares me when people IGNORE the social distancing guidelines.
We need to try to lower the fatality rates.
Playing baseball now certainly will NOT do that.

The commissioner is a jerk who needs to be replaced now. I love baseball it is my favorite sport. But you can’t put the players at risk. Let’s get real. Get rid of Manfred now he is dumb. Look at how he did not give the cheating Asros the right punishment take the championship away from them now.

Couldn’t agree more. Manfred has bungled EVERY situation that has come up.

Makes me kinda miss Bud Selig.

      …kinda.

@Dodgers Nothing before the All Star Game at least…

  4. I’ve never been more in agreement with you, Ron. We are far from attending baseball games at this moment.

You take extra special care, Joe. I communicate daily with my daughter in Brooklyn and know what yooze guys are going through.

      Be safe!

I figured from the outset the season would be cancelled, but the commissioner (and all sports and Trump) must be optimistic and provide hope. If they just said “seasons cancelled”, it would be a massive letdown for baseball and fans. Of course, if they did cancel, espn, fox, and all providers (and season ticket holders)would also immediately want a refund for the season, which owners dont want to think about now. They want to collect as much interest on that money as possible.

Bad idea, bad commissioner, greedy owners.
