Is Ken Rosenthal ‘Shaking the Dodgers Tree?’

Make no mistake about it, FOX Sports reporter and The Athletic (subscription required) senior writer Ken Rosenthal is ‘connected.’ Not only does he have a reputation for getting the inside scoop on nearly every professional athlete on the planet, but he also has more “sources” than any other reporter on the planet as well.

But also make no mistake about the fact that the extremely popular and highly-regarded reporter/journalist also likes to ‘shake the tree and see who falls out.’ In other words, much of what Rosenthal writes and reports is designed to provoke comment and controversy from his readers, friends, colleagues, and antagonists alike.

Like him or not, Rosenthal has a knack for getting the inside scoop.

Rosenthal did just that late Thursday night when it was reported on Twitter (via MLB Trade Rumors) that Dodgers two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and 2016 National League Rookie of the Year shortstop Corey Seager was being “targeted” by the Cincinnati Reds.

For those without a subscription to The Athletic, here is an excerpt from Rosenthal’s article which, as noted, is clearly designed to provoke comment and controversy from his readers, friends, colleagues, and antagonists alike:

Although Seager continues to receive accolades for his play on both sides of the ball, he also carries the reputation of being injury-prone. (Photo credit – Danny Moloshok)

While it may be foolish and risky to question Ken Rosenthal, it is a well-established fact that Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman is known for holding his cards extremely tight to his vest, and there has been absolutely nothing on the local media front to even remotely suggest that the Friedman has any plans whatsoever to include Seager – or any of his other young guns – in any trade deals with the Cincinnati Reds or anyone else.

Then again, even though Andrew Friedman is known for holding his cards extremely tight to his vest, Ken Rosenthal has a reputation for getting the inside scoop on nearly every professional athlete on the planet and has more “sources” than any other reporter on the planet, so you just never know.

Stay Tuned…

  1. Thanks to Rosenthal for giving a pretty good picture of what the Dodgers could possibly do over the remaining off season.

  2. Devin says:

He didn’t say Friedman was thinking about it, he said reds were interested. That’s the difference.

  3. Terry says:

Love my Dodgers but our sorry ass front office aint going to do shit AGAIN this year as Spankees go on to win another World Series!

    • Ryan says:

Please Terry, take your baseball ignorance and whining to that of another fan base.

      • Arthur Soto says:

She’s right the Dodgers are content on just winning the West and not the World series. They don’t have any money players. Players that play in OCTOBER!!!!!!! LIKE REGGIE JACKSON FOR EXAMPLE!!!!!!!😳😳😳😳😳🎉

  4. Doug says:

Cole doesn’t guarantee the Spankees a World Series. Just look at Houston. He’s no better going forward than he was yesterday..

  5. Harland says:

Dodgers need to do something if they want a chance to win it all. They can’t do it with they hsve. They need pitching and a right handed bat. Unfortunately the owners don’t care about the fans. The owners suck.

    • Harland, it’s tough to dispute what ya say here, because on the surface, that appears to be the way it is. Look at that ludicrous TV deal that the spineless degenerate that Kasten is has washed his hands of blaming only DTV and other providers for not picking up that Dodger station. Yet he is the one behind this to begin with. We all basically know that the Dodgers as they are now ARE NOT AN OCTOBER COMPETITIVE TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. From a post I made earlier this AM:
Folks, Seager is not going to the Reds, Lindor is not coming to Dodgers, Betts is not coming to Dodgers, Donalldson is not coming to Dodgers, Arenado is not being traded to Dodgers, Roberts will be Roberts doing as he has already said so, the very same things he did last year and especially with the pitching decisions in the NLDS. Expect more of the same, a lineup that is too left handed, a game of shuffle board every time the Dodgers face a LHP, and so on and so on. Maybe we might avoid a 4 th consecutive bouncing from the PS on the Dodger’s home field…end of story.

    • SoCalBum says:

393 victories in 4 years, and two World Series appearances and you are still whining. SMH!

      • Well most of the fan base has expressed similar feelings to current situation. i concur about the 393 wins and all and those 7 NL West titles speak for themselves. I am really having difficulties with what Roberts saying he would repeat those pitching decisions he made in game 5 all over again. That is actually my issue here. If you saw game 5 you also heard those fans in attendance how they expressed themselves. I am not the only one who has expressed an opinion on a WS championship drought going on 32 years. But the off season is still in play, so WSS. Repeating the same things over and over expecting different results has been brought up by many. I am not the only one.

      • LAtony59 says:

The objective of the season is to win the world series. It doesn’t matter how many wins they’ve had in the past 4 years or how many division titles they’ve had or how many world series appearances they’ve made. The goal is to win the world series, period end of story! And how long has it been since they’ve won it? Dave Roberts and the Dodgers ownership are a joke! Get ready for another season, no matter how many wins, without a world series championship.

      • Mark Wood says:

We weren’t promised regular season victories & WS ‘appearances’ now, were we?

    • David says:

So you’re saying there is a reason to be optimistic!

The knuckle-draggers need to stop whining and start appreciating the product that is in front of you. All this team does is win, make the playoffs, produce good young talent along with two Series appearances.

Adding one or two pieces would be nice, but it guarantees you NOTHING!!! Doesn’t guarantee you more wins, making the playoffs or a WS ring. Roberts keeps bringing us to the dance and the players on the field keep dropping the ball…at some point the players need to perform, it really is that simple!

      • Correct about players ‘dropping the ball’ in October. it might help, as some have suggested that Roberts and Co. put players in a better position in order to do so. IDK but I understand why most fans are frustrated with not winning at least 1 WS in these 7 years of division titles, albeit in a sort of sub par division as far as competition goes.

      • LAtony59 says:

So it was the players decision to start Hu Darvish in game 7 against the Astros? So it was the players fault that he got bombed and left in the game too long? So it was the players fault that Kershaw was brought in as a reliever against the Nationals and gave up two bombs? So it was the players fault that Gonsolin didn’t make the playoff roster but washed up,old man Rich Hill did? Give me a break! Roberts has no managerial experience or skills and it shows!!! Usually the best offensive player bats 3rd, Bellinger was the Dodgers best offensive player and Roberts never had him bat 3rd. He actually batted as low as 6th in the lineup, completely unacceptable. Definitely one of the dumbest lineup blunders that I’ve ever seen and it happened every game!!!

  7. Jack Furlong says:

Wont happend theyll just let the parade pass them by. Manny Machado was the upgrade at short and they didnt even consider him.

  8. Stevebendodger says:

I disagree with those that say you can’t win with this roster. You don’t even know who will be on the roster on Aug 1st 2020 so how can you determine what our chances of winning it all are.
I would say that we are one of the 5 most talented teams in baseball, probably the biggest favorite to won our division of all the favorites and you have to first make the playoffs to have a chance to win.
So the only real change as of now is that Maeda would have to pitch game 3 instead of Ryu! How do you know Maeda doesn’t pitch a great game or Jimmy Nelson has a great year and pitches instead of Maeda.?
Only time will tell, but I like our chances.

  9. Clint says:

Get rid of Seager while you can get something for him. His agent is Scott Boras a d he hates the Dodgeres so Seager would be gone after 2021 anyway.

  10. Scott Roberts says:

Everyone of you who bashes people who criticize the Dodgers and continue to be proud of our pennants are completely myopic. You’re ALL DELUSIONAL in your love for this team and the way it’s being run. NO CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 31 YEARS AND COUNTING. If those of you who appreciate our pennants must also be jazzed about participation trophies. It’s an absolute travesty that the front office has has sat on their hands all off season and doing NOTHING to make this team better. All of you who are okay with the way this team is being run is sickening. I wouldn’t want any of you in a foxhole with me.

  11. David Singer says:

Let’s see..Kasten has been GM/President in Atlanta/LA for a combined 21 years and has won approx 20 Division Titles and ONE World Series.I believe he feels that winning the Division is good enough.

  12. Uncle Ned says:

So easy to whine for some. Please whiners – answer the following questions:

Who has the best odds of winning the postseason – teams that play in it, or teams that don’t?
How is it that the Dodgers did not go 162 – 0 if they were the clear ‘best team in the NL’?
How is it that teams that defeated the Dodgers numerous times in the regular season, were nowhere to be found in the postseason?
How is it, that a team that loses a series to the Dodgers, sometimes wins the next series?
    Bonus question:
Do you whiners want a trade for Howie Kendrick? If not, why not?

  13. Al says:

The frustration is that the Dodgers are in the top of the league for revenue and net profit. The TV coverage sucks to add insult to injury. The team is so close to that elusive WS win that we all die with each lost game.
As fans we want a return on our emotional and monetary investment with the team spending or trading for the player that just might bring that title home.
Or maybe I’m just smoking too much of the good stuff.

  14. winie says:

Does anyone have a comment on the fact the Houston Astros cheated. Also it appears did Boston. After all joey learned his trade well.Even with video Houston needed 7 games. They and Boston need to be stripped of their titals but yes we need pitching.

  15. Daniel says:

What?! They’ve been to the WS twice and maybe only lost because the other teams cheated! And even if they didn’t cheat we’ve been on the playoffs every yr! They are good enough, sure any team can get better, but did Philly get better by getting Harper AND Realmuto? No, they didn’t even make the playoffs. Anybody whose ever played competitive sports knows that team comraderi, chemistry and shared history make a team better than the individual players.

  16. JJ says:

The Dodgers make bank whether they go to WS or not. Its about being competitive and maybe getting to the first round of postseason.

  17. D$ says:

Guys – control is an illusion, remember? Winning the World Series is not an entitlement, and let’s face it, as soon as we might win one, up goes the ante on being a dynasty forevermore. The Los Angeles Dodgers have given their fans so much to cheer for these last 7 years, something many Major League Baseball fans have not had at all. The fans want a championship but we can’t compel it, no matter how much we demand or whine. Is January really the time for October angst? Let’s be in the moment.

  18. I think the Dodgers are one of the best teams in baseball and if you really love the game itself, as I have for 70 years, nothing can compete with winning almost every day. I used to think the Yankees were Diamond Kings because they finished at the very top so many seasons. But the
fun is in savoring victory day after day, all season long, not just over the winter after a championship season. You win the last game, have a parade, cook out and that’s it. Four or 5 months of the NBA (I saw Wilt play, the Big O, and guys like Don Ohl) then a brand New baseball season.
It’s all that Heaven allows! Tony Chase

  19. Arthur Soto says:

Freedman is an IDIOT!!!!!! THE DODGERS HAVE NO MONEY PLAYERS!!!! PLAYERS THAT SHOW UP IN OCTOBER!!!!! LIKE REGGIE JACKSON FOR EXAMPLE!!!!! HE’S CONTENT ON WINNING THE WEST AND NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!! AND NOT WITH DAVE ROBERTS COACHING!!!! THEY WILL NEVER WIN!!!!! AND THAT’S A FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

    • Stevebendodger says:

You can’t possibly be a Dodgers Fan!

      • Stevebendodger, maybe I myself have been somewhat harsh this off season, but that’s because I was distraught from what I saw take place on October 9, 2019 when Dodgers were within 5 outs of moving on to the NLCS. Most will tell you that the team as the roster is now, just may not be enough to compete with the Yankees, deep in October. However, as I said before, by August 1st of course the roster makeup could very well be a bit different and could very well get us those 11 October wins. We however need a better job of managing in game decisions , especially with the pitching by Roberts. As well as the players showing up offensively in October, this would certainly get the team closer to those 11 October wins, WSS
