Dodgers Announce Verdugo as Mystery Bobblehead

When the Dodgers release their final promotional schedule for the new season, they usually include at least one unannounced bobblehead giveaway date, thereby allowing them to add a special one at a later time. On Tuesday morning, that previously unannounced bobblehead for the interleague game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at Dodger Stadium was officially revealed by the Dodgers via Twitter. It will be a bobblehead of extremely popular Dodgers rookie outfielder Alex Verdugo.

Although the 23-year-old Tucson, AZ native and Dodgers second-round pick in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Sahuaro High School in Tucson is currently on the 10-day injured list for a strained right oblique, he is expected to be back in time for his special night.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters during his pregame scrum at Marlins Park in Miami on Tuesday afternoon that his star outfielder is currently assigned to the team’s Camelback Ranch spring training facility in Glendale, AZ to rehab. However, Roberts emphasized that Verdugo has not yet begun any baseball activities.

“He’s in Arizona right now at CBR and he’s not doing anything baseball-specific,” Roberts said. “So with the oblique, we just want to really mindful that it’s something that you just want to take care of because it can come back and get you, and we don’t have any time for a setback where we’re at [with 42 games remaining in the regular season]. So to error, you know, a few extra days, we’re open to doing that.

“I knew that it was probably going to be more than two weeks anyway, so that’s kind of where we’re at,” Roberts added.

Verdugo has appeared in all but 56 of the games the Dodgers have played this season compiling an excellent slash-line of 294 / .342 / .475 / .817 with 22 doubles, two triples, and 12 home runs while driving in 44 runs. For good measure, he has also stolen four bases – third-most on the team behind Cody Bellinger‘s nine and Chris Taylor‘s seven.

Fans wishing to add Alex Verdugo’s first-ever major league bobblehead to their collection can purchase tickets for the September 17 game via the Dodgers website at Dodgers.com/promotions.
