Dodgers Trade Deadline Targets – Update

With less than one week remaining before Major League Baseball’s 2019 trade deadline, 23 of the 30 teams are still in contention for postseason play. Only the American League Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, and the National League Miami Marlins are all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

Unless there is a drastic change in standings over the next several days, it appears that the Dodgers may be limited to considering high profile closers like Ken Giles (Blue Jays) and Shane Greene (Tigers); setup reliever Aaron Bummer (White Sox); veteran relievers Mychal Givens (Orioles), Ian Kennedy (Royals) and Daniel Hudson (Blue Jays); and possibly previous closers Jose Leclerc (Rangers) and Blake Treinen (Athletics), who have significantly underperformed this season.

Considering the number of MLB teams looking for late-inning bullpen help, this is very much a seller’s market and the price in terms of players and/or prospects will likely be enormous. The Dodgers have one of the deepest minor league systems in MLB and the wherewithal to acquire whichever reliever they choose … IF they are willing to pay the price.

In the past, the Dodgers have been very protective of their top-rated prospects and there is no reason to believe that they will change this approach in 2019. Unless a team like the Blue Jays will accept a reasonable return for closer Ken Giles, the Dodgers will likely be content with marginal bullpen improvement(s) rather than overpay. Left-hander Aaron Bummer and/or right-hander Mychal Givens would be nice adds to the Dodgers bullpen, and their acquisition cost in prospects would likely be more reasonable.

Whether the trade target is Giles or Bummer or Givens, their respective teams would be stronger by taking any of several Dodgers prospects from the group of infielder/outfielder Edwin Rios, middle infielder Omar Estevez, catcher / second baseman Connor Wong, outfielder Zach Reks and pitchers Dennis Santana, Mitchell White and Jordan Sheffield.

Although his time in the major leagues with the Dodgers was brief, right-hander Dennis Santana remains a valuable commodity and would benefit many teams’ starting rotation. Perhaps even the Dodgers. (Photo courtesy of LA Dodgers)

Personally, I think Aaron Bummer would look good in Dodger Blue.

Go Dodgers!

Bummer would be a great fit IF the White Sox already declared themselves out of the WC race, that is. If so, a deal can certainly be made with them. Too bad about Treinen, I coveted him BADLY last season until Oakland decided they were gonna contend for a playoff spot (lol). Now he’s been overused and currently suffering from shoulder problems. I wonder if the Dodgers might be willing take a chance on Aaron Sanchez of the Blue Jays and remake him into a reliever for a change? Could end up being one of their more successful reclamation projects in recent years if it works…

Does Jesse Pearce work for Freidman as a disinformation officer? Is that what this article is.?
Will the dodgers lie in the weeds and dive in the deep water at the last minute and make a world series clinching trade? WSS.
