Dodgers Acquire Infielder Tyler White from Astros

The Dodgers have acquired utility infielder Tyler White from the Houston Astros in exchange for right-handed minor league pitcher Andre Scrubb.

The 28-year-old Mooresboro, North Carolina native and Astros 33rd round selection in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC was hitting .225 (49-for-218) with three homers and 21 RBI in 71 games when he was designated for assignment on July 19. Last year, however, he slashed an impressive .276 / .354 / .533 / .888 with 12 home runs and 42 RBI. Over his four-year MLB career, all with Houston, White had a career slash-line of 241 / .319 / .420 / .739.

Scrubb was selected by the Dodgers in the eighth round of the 2016 Draft out of High Point University in High Point, NC. The 6′-4″ / 265-pound right-hander appeared in 29 games with the Dodgers Double-A Tulsa Drillers this season, posting a 6-1 record and excellent 2.45 ERA, with 56 strikeouts in his 47.2 innings pitched. Over his four-year minor league career, Scrubb is 21-6 with a 2.37 ERA and 201 strikeouts in the 108 games in which he appeared.

Per longtime Dodgers beat writer Ken Gurnick, White, who is out of options, will go directly onto the Dodgers’ 25-man roster, with a corresponding roster move yet to be announced. Speculation, however, is that utility infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernandez, who injured his left hand on an awkward swing and miss during Wednesday night’s 3-2 loss to the Angels, will be placed on the 10-day injured list.

I’m no medical expert and there has been no update from the Dodgers, but Kiké’s injury on Wednesday night bears a strong resemblance to a hamate bone injury. (Video capture courtesy of SportsNet LA)

Looks chunky for an infielder. Just saying.

Complete waste of a deal, sounds like the Astros are gonna get the better of the Dodgers yet again with this one. Scrubb was one of their more reliable RP prospects and arguably their most durable on top of that. White looks more built to be behind the plate than anywhere else, to be honest (lol).

That said, wake me up when they finally call Lux up now that Hernandez has become the latest victim of the baseball gods’ non-stop meddling with this Dodger club so far this season:::yawn:::

Looks like Kiké Hernandez is headed to the IL. When Hernandez and Taylor are healthy there is no place for White (who is out of minor league options) unless one of Freese, Hernandez, or Taylor is traded.

  4. I just saw White today for the first time. It looks like the Dodgers like them kind of chunky, like Muncy.

I’m a long time Astro fan and was wondering what became of Tyler White after the Astros placed him on the DFA. I’m glad to see him land with a good organization like the Dodgers. I hope the Astros meet up with him again in October. The “Great White” might have a beer league physique but he is surprisingly nimble. He played a lot of first base this year due to injuries to key Astros infielders. He is also well liked by players and fans here in Houston and was a positive personality in the clubhouse. I have a feeling his offense will pick back up to last year’s level and you’ll be happy the Dodgers picked him up.

Thanks for the personal touch and insight, AF.

I am absolutely amazed at the character of (most) of these guys every time I walk into the Dodgers clubhouse.

Haven’t met Tyler one-on-one yet, but looking forward to it.

      Thanks again!
