Dodgers Recall Tony Gonsolin from Triple-A OKC

ThinkBlueLA has learned from a trusted source that the Dodgers have recalled right-hander Tony Gonsolin from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The move comes as no real surprise, with fellow right-hander Ross Stripling having been placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday (retroactive to July 25) for right biceps tendinitis. As a result, a starter is needed for Tuesday’s match-up against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field opposite Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland. To this point, the Dodgers starter on Tuesday has been listed as TBD.

Gonsolin has made one start for the Dodgers thus far this season against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 26. It did not go well for the 25-year-old Vacaville, CA native and Dodgers ninth-round selection in the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of  St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, CA. He allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits (including a home run) in his 4.0 innings of work. He did, however, strikeout three of the 20 Dbacks hitters he faced while walking none.

There have been widespread rumors that right-hander Dustin May (right) might be the one called up to replace Stripling in the Dodgers starting rotation. However, ThinkBlueLA has learned that it will instead be Tony Gonsolin (left).

In his 12 appearances (all starts) with the Oklahoma City Dodgers this season, Gonsolin is 1-4 with a 4.95 ERA. He has struck out 41 while walking 18 in his combined 36.1 innings pitched.

Although a corresponding roster move is not yet known, there have been on-going rumors that the Dodgers are planning to place utility infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernandez on the 10-day IL after he injured his left hand/wrist on a swing during a July 24 game against the Angels at Dodger Stadium. Although there have been no further updates from the Dodgers as to the extent of Kiké’s injury, initial X-rays came back negative.

“He’s as tough as they come,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, having removed Hernandez from Wednesday’s game. “Just an awkward swing that I saw he took. For him to need some more time to kind of gather himself, he never wants to come out of any game.

“We took some X-rays, and the X-rays were negative,” Roberts added. “Obviously, we’re talking about symptoms and how he feels when he swings and it’s affecting his swing, we want to be mindful of that. We just felt it was best to get him out of the game.”

Here again, if (when) Hernandez hits the IL, it will be retroactive to July 24, thus making him eligible to return as early as August 3 – unless, of course, the injury is more serious than initially thought; say… like… a hamate bone injury.

As of this writing, there has been no official announcement from the Dodgers regarding the Gonsolin move, or whose spot on the 25-man roster he will fill.

Stay tuned…

  1. Your bringing him up for a COORS game? If ur tryna trade him, this ain’t it.

  2. Not only that but for Tuesday’s game, unless Gonsolin replaces one of the other relievers, then Dodgers will play once again short on position players, if indeed he would replace Hernandez on the roster….

  3. Great choice of pic lol

  4. […] Meanwhile, Stripling’s injury created a void in the rotation for Tuesday’s matchup with the Colorado Rockies. It appears that will be filled by recalling Tony Gonsolin from Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to Ron Cervenka of ThinkBlueLA.com […]

Yet another dumb move by the Dodgers, Gonsolin has struggled to get back to form down at AAA OKC ever since he came back from that hamstring injury he had recently and now they’re gonna bring him up to get knocked around again in the LAST place you want your struggling rookie SP to pitch in!?!?!? My goodness, May would’ve been the better option since he at least he has the stuff to induce groundballs in a flyball-friendly environment. Dennis Santana’s another one, but it looks like he’s mentally “checked out” this season so that’s that. Besides, I don’t think Gonsolin trusts the Dodgers to be there for him defensively based on what happened in his rather infamous MLB debut against Arizona last time out. This has all the makings of a VERY ugly loss for the Dodgers. They better pray they’re still able to take 2 of 3 up there in Denver, but I honestly doubt it at this point…

Would not be surprising if tomorrow’s start is a showcase for Gonsolin. Not ideal location, but another team may want to see how he handles himself in a very difficult park for pitchers before completing a trade.

      • I can also see that as a showcase for Gonsolin because he certainly would be moved first before even considering any deal with May. As I have mentioned on other pages, Lux, May must remain untouchable because no reliever obtained will guarantee anything on his own. Will Smith is up here to stay now as I view it so obviously he is an untouchable as well. I am not sure about Ruiz at this point but they may consider dealing him if Dodgers are convinced Smith can handle the starting catcher spot, which I am confident he certainly will.

Urias named the starting pitcher tonight; Gonsolin not officially on the active roster. Trade in the works?

      Gonsolin has officially been recalled.

Trust me, if my sources weren’t reliable, I wouldn’t have posted it.
