Kelly stoops to new low

Dodger fans who aren’t particularly fond of right-hander Joe Kelly have yet another reason not to care for him … as if another one were needed.

During Friday night’s complete meltdown by the Dodgers defense at Coors Field, baseball’s least popular venue (at least from a pitcher’s perspective), the 31-year-old Anaheim, CA native with the worst ERA in the Dodgers bullpen (6.26) actually blamed the official scorer for his poor – but predictable – outing that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called “the worst inning we’ve played all year.” Additionally, Kelly went so far as to suggest that the official scorer was “high.”

“I’m not a believer in me giving up five hits,” a visibly upset Kelly told reporters after having been charged with giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits in his one inning of work on Friday night. “It is Colorado. And we’re in Denver. Who knows, that guy up there could be [expletive] high.”

Pure class, Joe.

And believe it. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how the runs and hits are officially scored, they are your responsibility.

The Dodgers lost that wild 3:31 contest (which included a 19-minute lightning delay) by a final score of 13-9; a game in which baseball’s best team committed three errors – all in that worst fifth inning.

“That fifth inning, for us, obviously the worst inning we’ve played all year,” Roberts said. “We kicked it around and I thought Joe [Kelly] threw the ball really well and had nothing to show for it. Very uncharacteristic of our guys.

“It’s just some kind of in-between hops, just plays that we typically finish. I’m not going to read too much into it because our guys prepare really well,” added Roberts. “When you play 162 games, nights like this, unfortunately, are going to happen.”

As for Kelly throwing the ball “really well,” 21 of his 29 pitches were indeed for strikes. The problem is, those 29 pitches appeared like this on MLB Gameday and in “that guy up there[‘s]” official scorebook:

You can paint a [rock] gold, but it’s still a [rock].

  1. When is Roberts going to admit he made a mistake in signing Kelly? https://t.co/LzPkOZoGCJ

Roberts has little to do with player signings/acquisitions other than perhaps being asked his opinion. He has everything to do with who plays when and where; although even then he has probably been instructed to “play the money.” Kelly at Coors is/was a recipe for disaster.

  2. Joe Collins and Orel Hershiser correctly predicted on Thursday night that last night’s game would be like this. In fact they said be ready for the whole series.
This game could’ve went either way and unfortunately it went to the Rockies. Better luck tonight.

    Just release Kelly..
We’ll have to eat the $24 million. This guy is a CANCER to our team

  4. Manuel says:

Wow, and I thought folks liked Kelly around here (lol)…

Lots of **** in that inning. Ryu had Dahl dead to rights on a 3rd strike nailing the outside bottom corner the Umpire missed. Had that AB not ended in a bomb, the whole inning would have been different. Errors never help, but it’s irrational to expect perfection from both fielders and pitchers; there are just too many chances statistically in a 162 game regular season. Friedman took flack year after year for not spending on a pen arm, and when he finally signs one, he’s been a bust. Not the only high $$$ value reliever deal to look bad in baseball history though. Kelly’s commentary does NOT reflect well on his sportsmanship, which is usually something I’m quite proud of the Dodgers for… One game. Take your licks, remove head from rectum, and gettem today! At least it wasn’t in October.

Right now the way the roster is constituted we have no chance against the Yankees or Astros if were lucky enough to make it that far. Acquire Wheeler from the Mets, who is a free agent at the end of the year and will cost less than acquiring Vasquez ,Smith, or Hand. Make Urias the left hander reliever leading up to Baez and Jansen. This team is is built for the season right now,not the playoffs and World Series. Kershaw will get killed by the Yankee powerful right hand bats. The rotation in the playoffs should be Buehler ,Ryu,Wheeler and Kershaw. Can’t count on Hill coming back healthy and move Maeda to the bullpen or trade him or Striping in a Wheeler deal. Much more cost efficient.Mr. Friedman, don’t let us down.
