Dodgers activate Beaty from IL, place Seager on it

As a surprise to absolutely no one, the Dodgers have placed 25-year-old shortstop Corey Seager on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 12) for what is now officially being classified as “…between a Grade 1 and Grade 2” strain of his left hamstring.

What perhaps is a bit of a surprise – at least for some – is that the Dodgers activated 26-year-old utility infielder Matt Beaty from the 10-day IL (for a left hip flexor strain suffered on June 3) to replace Seager on the team’s 25-man roster.

Seager left Tuesday’s game against the Angels of Anaheim in the top of the ninth inning when he pulled up lame rounding third base. It was immediately obvious what had happened to the Charlotte, NC native and Dodgers 2012 first-round draft pick (out of Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, NC), when he suddenly grabbed his left hamstring.

Prior to the injury, Seager had logged a season-best nine-game hitting streak, during which he went 17-for-37 (.459) with one home run, seven doubles and nine RBI. On the season he is 66-for-237 (.278) with eight home runs, 21 doubles and 38 RBI.

A no-doubter.

Prior to his left hip flexor strain, Beaty had appeared in 17 games with the Dodgers and was 12-for-42 (.286) with seven RBI. The Snellville, GA native and Dodgers 12th-round draft pick in 2015 (out of Belmont University in Nashville, TN) made two rehab appearances with the team’s Advanced Single-A affiliate Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, where he went 2-for-7 (.286) with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.

Although Beaty was initially scheduled to make two more rehab appearances with the Quakes, Seager’s untimely injury moved things up by a couple of days; that and the fact that both of his hits while rehabbing with the Quakes were doubles.

Obviously, the 10-day thing is a pipe dream for Seager’s return and, realistically, so are the four weeks that some are saying it will take for him to be in game condition again. The good news – at least for those living in the Southern California area – is that he will also probably also make several rehab appearances with the Quakes before returning to action under the lights at Dodger Stadium … so there’s that.

Play Ball!

  1. Manuel says:

Between a Grade 1 and a Grade 2, eh? Wow, Seager caught a HUGE break then. Means he won’t miss more than 4 weeks and will definitely be back by the middle of next month (IF he doesn’t rush himself back, that is). Good news for Beaty, he’s here to stay and boy are they gonna need his bat for those situations in which the rest of the team has struggled to get runners in from 2B and 3B with nobody out of late. Still need to bring back Will Smith soon because the Dodgers can’t really rely on Barnes sticking behind the plate in a starter capacity when he’s not even their best option there anymore…
