All boxes checked for Corey Seager

In case you haven’t noticed, Corey Seager is back … with a vengeance.

In the three spring training games in which he has appeared (with two more scheduled), the 24-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native and Dodgers 2012 first-round draft pick is 2-for-7 (.286) with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.

“I feel good, no issues at all,” Seager told ThinkBlue LA, following his final spring training game in Arizona. “I’m 100 percent ready to go.”

As Dodger fans know, Seager got off to a slow start this spring, a conscious decision by the team’s medical staff as he works his way back from Tommy John and hip surgery. And even though it was beginning to look as though he might miss the March 28 season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium, he and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts have maintained all along that he would not.

“He has [checked off all the boxes],” Roberts said. “I think that given his recovery and what we’ve had to do to get him ready for the season, the next three days, as far as the three games that he plays in Anaheim, I think they’re going to certainly help him. I think that what we were up against, I think we’ve done the most we can and I think Corey will be ready for the season.”

If game-1 of the annual three-game spring training Freeway Series against the Angels of Anaheim is any indication, it appears that both Seager and Roberts are spot-on in their respective assessments.

With two outs in the top of the first inning and on a 1-2 count, the left-handed-hitting Seager looped a single into left-center field on a pitch that was clearly out of the strike zone. He would then come around to scored on a double by Max Muncy – his first of two on the night – on a 3-2 count. With Seager running on the pitch, he scored easily from first base without a throw.

Seager’s opposite-field single in the first inning on Sunday night is a very good sign.

But perhaps of even greater interest and the final box to be checked was a perfectly executed 6-4-3 double play that Seager started with one out in the bottom of the second inning on a ball hit to his right. Seager fielded the ball cleanly and fired a bullet to Dodgers second baseman Kiké Hernandez, who fired a bullet to Muncy … and it wasn’t even close.

Seager had to veer to his right to field a hard ground ball off the bat of Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons to start a perfectly executed 6-4-3 double play.

Yep. All boxes have been checked for Corey Seager.

Play Ball!
