Dodgers official press release on Andrew Toles, et al

The Dodgers today placed both outfielder Andrew Toles (torn right ACL) and left-handed pitcher Adam Liberatore (left groin strain) on the 10-day disabled list, while recalling infielder/outfielder Scott Van Slyke and outfielder Brett Eibner from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Van Slyke, 30, returns to the big league club after going 3-for-15 (.200) with a double and one RBI in four games with Triple-A OKC. Prior to being optioned to OKC on May 2, Van Slyke hit .129 (4-for-31) with five runs, one double, one home run and two RBI in 21 games for the Dodgers this season. He has appeared in seven games (four starts) at first base, nine games (two starts) in left field and one game in center field for Los Angeles this year.

Eibner, 28, will make his third stint with the Dodgers this season and has gone 1-for-5 (.200) in three games with the big league club. In 21 games with the OKC Dodgers, Eibner has hit .258 (17-for-66) with 11 runs, two doubles, a triple, three home runs and 10 RBI. The San Diego, California native, who was acquired by the Dodgers on January 25 from the Oakland Athletics, saw his first big-league action in 2016 with Kansas City and Oakland, combining to hit .193 (36-for-187) with six homers and 22 RBI.

Toles left Tuesday night’s game against the Pirates in the top of the seventh inning with the right knee injury after chasing down a fly ball in left field. The Dodger leadoff hitter has appeared in 31 games for the club this season, hitting .271 with 17 runs, three doubles, five home runs and 15 RBI.

Liberatore last pitched for the Dodgers on Monday against the Pirates, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning. In two relief appearances for Los Angeles this season, he has allowed one run in 1.1 innings (6.75 ERA) and has held batters to a .200 average (1-for-5).

Right-handed pitcher Josh Ravin was also reinstated from the disabled list today and has been optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Ravin, who started the season on the DL with a right groin strain, appeared in four rehab games with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and the OKC Dodgers, allowing one run in a combined 4.0 innings, while striking out eight and not issuing a walk.

Recalling Eibner and Van Slyke to replace Toles and Liberatore is a head scratcher for me. Ryu returns to the roster today so someone has to go down to make room on the active roster, seemingly Ryu into Liberatore’s spot makes sense. I can rationalize Van Slyke’s return to play 1b against LH pitching — IF he was actually hitting well against LH’ers which he isn’t. Or, if he absolutely rakes playing at Coors Field in his career — but his numbers there are just good, not great. Eibner? Perhaps Dodgers are planning to give Seager a day of rest tonight against the LH’er with either Taylor or Hernandez at SS and the other at 2b? For me, I would rather have seen Eibner DFA with either Verdugo, Dickson, or Culberson added to the roster — even Thompson who has been hitting well in the last week.

“Recalling Eibner and Van Slyke to replace Toles and Liberatore is a head scratcher for me.”

The Dodgers were running with a short bench, having called up Liberatore for some bullpen help. After the Ross Stripling pinch-runner thing which, although humorous now because of how it worked out, was both risky and desperate, as Roberts had absolutely no one left on his bench.

Although I do not know if you are on Twitter or not, I tweeted out that my guess was that the Dodgers would recall Van Slyke or Eibner. I certainly did not expect them to recall both of them but that was before I learned of the Liberatore injury (although I actually question it).

I would have much rather preferred that the Dodgers called up O’Koyea Dickson instead of either SVS or Eibner, but because he (nor Alex Verdugo) are currently not on the 40-man, I pretty much knew that this wasn’t going to happen. That said, should SVS and Eibner continue to tank, it will only be a matter of time before Dickson or Verdugo get the call. The key factor is that they absolutely MUST play every day and not sit.

Nope, not on twitter, Facebook, or other social media. I am just a fan, but if were up to me Dickson would have already been on the 40 man roster in place of Eibner, or add back Culberson. I think there is little chance that Eibner would be claimed on waivers if DFA, but even if he were lost I don’t see it as being a big loss.

I don’t see why Van Slyke is being recalled either. He was sent down a week ago because he wasn’t hitting and hasn’t shown much sign of finding his stroke at OKC. I assume he’s coming up to platoon with Utley at first. Why not give Dickson a chance at 1B until AGon is healthy and keep Bellinger in LF? Or call up Verdugo…it may be too soon, but that’s what they said about Cody. The problem with having these scrubs in the lineup is that Roberts will play them.

Andrew Toles’ (unfortunately final) 2017 slash line vs. LHP, along with his current rank on the team:
    .400(3)/.400(5T)/.600(1)/1.000(3)
Small sample size? Of course, 5AB. That’s my point. With numbers like those why is it so small?
This is what I call mindless platooning.
I reckon he might rank higher in OBP except it seems the only way to walk Toles is to hold up 4 fingers.
