Dodgers make Yaisel Sierra signing official

The Dodgers have officially announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Yaisel Sierra to a six-year contract.

Sierra, 24, pitched five seasons in Cuba’s Serie Nacional with Holguin (2010-14) and Sancti Spiritus (2012), going 16-21 with 25 saves and a 4.23 ERA in 131 games (25 starts). Sierra, who was ranked No. 13 on Baseball America’s Top 20 Cuban prospects list, pitched for the country’s gold-medal winning national team at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers placed right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas (rib resection surgery) on the 60-day disabled list.

As when the signing was first announced, I do not really have an opinion on Sierra. I have tried, but I just cannot get excited or disappointed in this addition to the 40 man. Is he the pitcher with the stats mentioned in the article, or is he the pitcher that pitched before the scouts at his “tryout”? Like everything else, probably somewhere in the middle. The question I have is why are LAD spending $30+ million on an unknown, and yet they have not open discussions about an extension for Jensen?

Spot on, AC. Seems to me $30 million would’ve gone a long way toward getting a big-league set up guy. An ERA of 6 in the equivalent of AA? We have plenty of farmhands who are better than that. Seems to me Guggs has a gambling problem when it comes to Cuban signings.

A good question. Still only 24 and presumably ahead of many other 24-year olds in the system. He has pitched primarily as a reliever and one would expect he might have had better numbers than he has shown in relief.

The Dodgers are apparently going to try him as a starter. The $30M 6-year contract is a bit surprising.
