Hang on Dodger fans – It’s happening

Having lost out on the three most sought-after free agent starting pitchers in the week preceding the 2015 MLB Winter Meetings, the Dodgers wasted little time making up for what many perceive as lost ground and missed opportunities late Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

Although nothing is final yet and physicals are still pending, here’s what Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Farhan Zaidi have reportedly done so far with the Winter Meeting only 24 hours old:

  • Re-signed soon-to-be 37-year-old second baseman Chase Utley
  • Acquired 34-year-old veteran Japanese right hander Hisashi Iwakuma
  • Acquired 27-year-old fireballer Aroldis Chapman
  • Hired 39-year-old former MLB journeyman Chris Woodward as their new infield coach
  • Are said to be in talks with the Marlins for right-hander Jose Fernandez (a move that would cost them one or more of their top prospects)
  • Named Director of Player Development (and managerial runner-up) Gabe Kapler as their new first base coach
While some may squabble over who will close for the Dodgers in 2016, it is impossible to argue that the Dodgers bullpen just became exponentially better with the addition of Aroldis Chapman. (Photo credit - Ron Cervenka)

As you would expect, when you have representatives from every MLB team in attendance at one place at the same time, you will also have the largest gathering of national media, so-called baseball experts and analysts and local beat writers together at the same time as well. The result, of course, is non-stop, near-24-hour rumors and speculation. In fact, some media-types have been known to go several days without sleep during the Winter Meetings for fear of missing “the big one.”

Rest assured that Friedman and Zaidi are far from finished wheeling and dealing and don’t be surprised if they leave the Music City with the most marbles in their pouch (and highest payroll) come Saturday afternoon.

No problem, just go get another reliever that throws 102 MPH.

Do the Dodgers ever have any luck than than “bad luck?”
