So what have you done for us lately, Scott Schebler?

As has been the case for most of his six-year professional career, Dodgers rookie outfield prospect Scott Schebler has seemingly always played in the shadow of someone else – including the likes of Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson and, more recently, Corey Seager. Any while the quiet, extremely likable 24-year-old Cedar Rapids, Iowa native has never complained about this – not ever – he has made it perfectly clear that he plays with a chip on his shoulder (his own words) because of it.

ESPNLA's Mark Saxon posted this on Twitter recently.

ESPNLA’s Mark Saxon posted this on Twitter after Schebler hit his second career home run on Wednesday night.

Although Schebler had already made his MLB debut on June 5, 2015 in which he went 1 for 3 with a single, he was optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City immediately following that game. But when he received a September 1 call-up back to the Dodgers, it was very obvious that he brought his chip with him.

Since returning to the Dodgers, Scheb (as his friends and teammates call him) has only gone 4 for 11 (.363) with two home runs to give him a career (albeit brief) slash-line of .357 / .400 / .786 for a remarkable 1.186 OPS.

Schebler’s first home run was a monster 447-foot shot to right field off of Padres right-hander James Shields at Petco Park on September 4. His second, a mere 404-footer to straightaway center, came off of Angels right-hander Garrett Richards on the very first pitch of the game at Angels Stadium on September 9. He also has two stolen bases in two attempts to go along with his two RBIs in the five games (two starts) since his September 1 call-up.

Scott Schebler has four hits since his September 1 call-up, two of which have been home runs. The first was a monster 447-foot shot off of Padres ace Scott shields...

Although it isn’t fair to lump Schebler into the same category as Dodgers number one-ranked prospect Corey Seager, who also received a September 1 call up and is doing exceptionally well, the 21-year-old Seager has yet to hit his first MLB home run. He does, however, have four doubles among his nine MLB hits and has driven in four runs.

The point here is that even though it is highly unlikely that Schebler will make the Dodgers postseason roster, he has quickly proven that he belongs in no one’s shadow. He has also shown us that he will, in all likelihood, be in the Dodgers Opening Day lineup on April 4, 2016 – chip and all.

I like watching Schebler and Ruggiano, they are doing a lot better than I expected.
