You will be missed Kevin Towers… by no one

The Arizona Diamondbacks took their first step towards rebuilding their organization late Wednesday night – they fired general manager Kevin Towers.

Surely Dodger fans remember Kevin Towers. He’s the guy who, along with D-backs owner Ken Kendrick:

  1. Demanded that if the Dodgers clinched the N.L. West Division at Chase Field last year (which they did) that they could not come back out onto the field and celebrate with the many Dodgers fans who had made the six hour drive across the desert to watch their beloved team do so.
  2. Went absolutely ballistic when the Dodgers celebrated their NL West championship in the D-backs pool after Chase Field had been cleared of all fans and in front of no one.
  3. Said during a radio interview “If I would have had a carton of baseballs I would have fired them into the dugout from where I was sitting behind home plate.” when teammates fed Juan Uribe (aka ‘King Kong’) a banana in the Dodgers dugout at Dodger Stadium after Uribe hit three home runs in one game against the D-backs.
  4. Threatened Dodger fans sitting  in the exclusive (and expensive) seats directly behind home plate at Chase Field that if they did not change out of their Dodger clothing they would be physically removed by security personnel – this because he did not want them to appear on television wearing Dodger gear.

Yes, the sore loser with the bad (and hostile) attitude towards the Dodgers and their fans was finally given his just reward (and his pink slip) on Thursday night from D-backs owner Ken Kendrick, another peach of a man himself, as his near last place team prepares for a three-game weekend series at Dodger Stadium beginning tonight.

The writing was on the wall for Towers in May of this season when the D-backs hired former Cardinals manager and recently inducted Hall of Famer Tony La Russa as their “Chief Baseball Officer” – a position that “oversaw all team baseball operations” and one in which Towers reported to him. Many speculated that this was the first step in clipping Towers’s decision-making wings and his first step out the door.

Fans of Kevin Towers (if there are any) can rest assured that the hothead will undoubtedly land on his feet somewhere in professional baseball (or perhaps as a talk show host on a certain radio station that is known for hiring former general managers who have been fired). After all, “A bad penny always turns up again.”

The Diamondbacks will reportedly make an official announcement on the Towers firing later today.

Oh, so this would be the reason why life feels a little more worth living today.

Never mind… call it what they may, it still sounds a lot like a dismissal to me.

9:27am: Arizona has announced via press release (in a somewhat oblique manner) that Towers has been removed from the general manager position.

The club says that it will open a search for a new GM, with the interview process beginning this week. “Any additional changes within the Baseball Operations department will be decided upon jointly” between LaRussa, President and CEO Derrick Hall, and the new GM, according to the announcement.

*****>> Meanwhile, Towers has seemingly not been fired, per se. The team says that he has been offered another position within the organization, and is considering the opportunity. In a prepared statement, LaRussa says that Towers “would like to see who the general manager is before making his own decision.”

So I take it this means, he’s still with the team but he’s not the GM.

Good move by La Russa. Next move – fire Kirk Gibson.
