Baker Expected to Step Down as Astros Manager

Former Dodgers outfielder (1976-1983) and longtime MLB manager Dusty Baker hinted that he may retire from the game following his team’s elimination from the 2023 postseson on Monday night.

The very first question asked of the 74-year-old Riverside, CA native during his postgame interview immediately following the Astros ugly 11-4 loss to the Texas Rangers at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston was what his future plans were. In true Dusty Baker style (and true Dusty Baker class), the future Hall of Fame manager answered, without hesitation, that he did not want to take away the accomplishments of his players, and there were many, answering:

“I don’t know, I haven’t had time to evaluate or think about my future, cuz I’m down the list as far as… you know, I’m not that kind of dude. I don’t want to steal the spotlight or anything from these guys. You know, you gotta savor what we did, you gotta think about how we can get better, and then I’ll evaluate my situation in my life.”

Although the question was one that has been on the minds of many, its timing was rather awkward, considering that it was the first question asked of Baker just minutes after Game-7 of a very exciting 2023 American League Championship Series – a series loaded with outstanding performances by both teams.

But regardless, and as noted above, the extremely popular future Hall of Fame manager answered it with dignity and class.

Well done, Dusty, and Godspeed to you, whatever you decide to do.

Enjoy Cooperstown!
