Have (Another) Night, Max Muncy!

There is an exceptionally good chance that the 53,675 on-hand at Dodger Stadium for Friday night’s interleague game between the National League West first-place Los Angeles Dodgers and the American League West first-place Texas Rangers witnesses the single most exciting game of their respective lives – especially for those sporting Dodger Blue. They witnessed 35-year-old Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy have the second three-home-run game of his (now) eleven-year MLB career, nine of which as a Dodger.

“Max Muncy with his second career three-home-run game, number three the game-ender!” an excited Joe Davis told SportsNet LA viewers.

After crushing a 399-footer to right-center field in the bottom of the third to give his team an early 1-0 lead, the popular Midland, TX (not a typo) native slugged a 396-footer to left field to pull to within one of the then 3-2-leading Rangers. And then, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and on an 0-2 count, Muncy crushed an 86.1-MPH slider from Rangers left-hander Jacob Latz, sending it 401 feet into the Right Field Pavilion and sending happy Dodgers fans home with yet another (seemingly) trademark come-from-behind win.

“It’s just special. Any time you hit a home run in a big league game is special, let alone three,” Muncy told reporters postgame. “I still think about the first time I did it, so it’s just a special night, and to get the win on top of it was great,” he added.

Muncy’s combined near-quarter-mile (1,196 feet) three home runs moved him past Dodgers legend Steve Garvey and into sixth on the Dodgers all-time home run leaderboard, with 213 round-trippers. Next up on that prestigious list is former Dodger great Ron Cey, who finished his 12 seasons with the Dodgers with 228 jacks.
