Filling the Four Hole

With Dodgers full-squad workouts now officially underway at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ, the burning question on many (most) Dodgers fans’ minds is: Who will be Dodgers manager Dave Roberts‘ (almost) everyday second baseman?

This question would have been a no-brainer had 30-year-old utility infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman not injured his right ankle while running the bases against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 3, 2025. Edman’s injury was a recurrence of a sprain originally sustained in early May of 2025 and led to surgery this past November to repair ligament damage and remove bone spurs.

The popular Pontiac, MI native and sixth-round draft pick in 2016 by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Stanford University was acquired by the Dodgers on July 29, 2024 in a three-team deal. Unfortunately, in his 134 games in Dodger Blue, Edman owns a less-than-stellar slash line of .229 / .280 / .392 / .672, with 91 strikeouts in his 485 official at-bats. That’s a strikeout rate of 18.762%, or nearly once every five at-bats. That said, he does have 19 home runs, 18 doubles, two triples, and 69 RBIs in those 485 ABs, so there’s that.

Were it not for a lingering ankle injury, the Dodgers everyday second baseman probably would have been Tommy Edman.(Wally Skalij)

So, who are Roberts’ other options at 2B? The three most likely candidates are 36-year-old Miguel Rojas, 27-year-old Hyeseong Kim, and 24-year-old top Dodgers prospect Alex Freeland.

In his four seasons and 426 games as a Dodger, Rojas slashed a mediocre .248 / .304 / .352 / .656, with 19 home runs and 103 RBI. In his 71 games and 161 ABs as a Dodger in 2025, Kim slashed .280 / .314 / .385 / .699, with three home runs and 17 RBI. In his 29 games and 84 ABs as a Dodger in 2025, Freeland slashed .190 / .292 / .310/ . 602, with two home runs and six RBI.

A burning question indeed.

Freeland and Kim need to step up. I think we have it covered until Tommy gets back. I hope Ward gets a good long look in ST. Also Call.

Second base will be fine until Edman comes back with Kim Vreeland and Maggie Ro. What has reLly got my attention is the three outfield prospects George DePaulo and Hope.
Our Outfield in 27 with Pages and these three should be fantastic.
