Will Smith – Done Deal

Yesterday, it was reported that 28-year-old Dodgers catcher Will Smith was ranked by MLB.com as the second-best catcher in the game behind only 25-year-old Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman. And though it is often said “No good deed goes unpunished,” in this case it was actually rewarded … to the tune of $8.550 million.

It’s probably safe to say that there isn’t a Dodger fan on the planet who doesn’t see this deal as an absolute steal for their beloved team. In fact, it’s hard to believe that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman didn’t offer Smith a longer and more lucrative contract extension. That said, should the extremely popular Louisville, KY native and Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2016 out of the University of Louisville have even an average 2024 season, he and his agents at Sosnick Cobbe & Karon will be in a great position to land a long and lucrative contract extension moving forward.

Through his (thus far) five MLB seasons, Smith owns a career slash line of .261/.357/.483/.848, with 91 career home runs and 306 career RBIs. During his All-Star 2023 season, his 19 home runs and 76 RBI’s ranked sixth and fifth respectively on the team. For good measure, he also threw out 19 would-be base stealers in 2023 (21%).

Smith’s 19 home runs in 2023 were sixth most on the team.

Here again, make no mistake about it, Will Smith is gonna get PAID.

…and rightfully so.
