The Dodgers announced on Saturday that they had acquired some additional depth with the signing of 29-year-old catcher Chris Okey and 26-year-old right fielder/third baseman Brendon Davis, both of whom will reportedly begin the 2024 season in the team’s minor league system.
The news, which was first reported by MLB Trade Rumors, indicated that it is unclear at this time if the pair will receive invitations to the Dodgers Major League Spring Training camp, although it is hard to believe that they would not, as both already have MLB experience. Okey appeared in seven games with the Cincinnati Reds in 2022 and two games with the Angels of Anaheim last season and Davis three games with the Detroit Tigers in 2022.
Okey was drafted by Cincinnati in the second round in 2016 out of Clemson University. In his combined 14 MLB at-bats with the Reds, he went 2-for-14 (.143), both of which were singles. He was also hit by a pitch and does not yet have a Major League RBI.
Ironically, Davis was drafted by the Dodgers in the fifth round in 2015 out of Lakewood High School in Lakewood, CA but was traded to the Rangers at the 2017 trade deadline in the deal that brought (then) 30-year-old five-time All-Star right-hander Yu Darvish to the Dodgers. Although Davis made it as far as Double-A Tulsa with the Dodgers, he missed the 2020 season due to MiLB’s cancellation of the season.
