Sometimes The Best Moves Are The Ones You Don’t Make

Make no mistake about it, 28-year-old shortstop Carlos Correa is a good baseball player; an exceptionally good baseball player.

But also make no mistake about it, Carlos Correa is a cheater.

Correa was a member of the 2017 Houston Astros team that cheated the Dodgers out of the 2017 World Series Championship through a well-devised (and well-proven) sign-stealing scandal. As such, he is arguably the single most hated baseball player on the planet among Dodgers fans.

On Tuesday afternoon, it was rumored and later confirmed that the the Dodgers were one of several teams who had made a very substantial offer to acquire the two-time All-Star, Gold Glove and Platinum Glove winner, 2015 Rookie of the Year, and cheating shortstop through his agent Scott Boras; a rumor that certainly did not sit well with many (most) Dodgers fans.

Carlos Correa will not be a Dodger – that’s the good news.

The bad news, on many levels, is that he will be a San Francisco Giant … at least for the next 10 years.

Late Tuesday night it was reported that the Ponce, Puerto Rico native and first round draft pick in 2012 by the Astros out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy in Gurabo, Puerto Rico had signed an astronomical 13-year / $350 million free agent contract with the division-rival San Francisco Giants.

It is the second-largest free agent deal of all-time behind the $360 million free agent deal that outfielder Aaron Judge signed with the New York Yankees last week, and the fourth-largest contract in MLB history behind Mike Trout‘s $426.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Mookie Betts‘ $365 million contract with the Dodgers, and Judge’s new contract with the Yankees. It is, however, the largest contract in MLB history for a non-outfielder. Additionally, there is no opt-out clause in the deal.

As Passan notes, the Giants, more specifically Giants President of Baseball Operations (and former Dodgers General Manager) Farhan Zaidi, think Correa is worth it. This, of course, remains to be seen.

The loudest cheer that Carlos Correa ever received from Dodgers fans was when Dodgers right-hander Evan Phillips struck him out on August 10, 2022. (Ron Cervenka)

But there is one thing that you can absolutely positively count on. The baseball world is going to hear boos of the likes never heard before in MLB history each and every time Dodgers PA announcer Todd Leitz announces the name “Carlos Correa,”

…of this, you can be sure.

Play Ball!

First question is Jeff Passan and Jesse Pearce one and the same person???? LoL.

Dodgers do not need Correa at those terms.

    In my defense —

Yes, after Corey Seager (still a fair amount of angst remains over the Dodgers not doing more to keep him) and Trea Turner, Correa was my choice for free agent shortstop (better and younger player than Bogaerts or Swanson). It was a difficult about face for me as I too detested all of the Houston Cheatos, including Correa, but we know that the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees were guilty of electronic sign stealing (i.e., cheated) during that same period, the Atlanta Braves admittedly doctored baseballs, umpires caught Rick Honeycutt cutting baseballs with a thumbtack, etc., etc . I do wonder if I was rationalizing Correa to the Dodgers while I considered the possibility of him playing for the Padres or Giants, I would rather have him as a Dodger. Now, he is a Giant and Bogaerts (Red Sox) with the Dodgers apparently content to have Gavin Lux as their starting shortstop. I must confess that I think the Correa and Bogaerts contracts are absurd and glad that the Dodgers had better business sense. I can only hope that Freddie Freeman’s buddy, Dansby Swanson, is the Dodgers opening day SS in 2023

Dodgers signed Thor. 1 yr deal hopefully with an option

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Doesn’t seem to be an option, Syndergaard probably didn’t want one — betting on himself to regain his dominance and look for a bigger pay day next year

      • jalex says:

still, a 1/12m with a mutual option, 1m buyout would have cut the aav to 6.5 and allowed thor to walk away for better opportunities.
not sure why AF wouldnt insist on that.

        • Jesse Pearce says:

Good question — it may have to do with the other offers he received for more money and multiple years (according to reports). What I read — Thor was swayed by the Dodgers recent success with increasing pitchers velocity by tweaking mechanics.

    Carlos Correa, 2017 *stros. Cheater.
Carlos Correa, SF Giants. I didn’t need another reason to hate him.
