Giants Signing of Manaea Could Be Blessing for Dodgers, Others

When news broke late Sunday night that the San Francisco Giants had signed 30-year-old free agent left-hander Sean Manaea to a two-year / $25-million deal, it undoubtedly left a good many NL West Division rival fans scratching their respective heads.

I mean, the soon-to-be (on February 1) 31-year-old Valparaiso, IN native and first round draft pick by the Kansas City Royals out of Indiana State University in 2013 does have a sort-of-ok career record of 58-50 with a sort-of-ok 4.06 career ERA over his seven Major League seasons – six with the Oakland A’s and the last (2022) with the division-rival San Diego Padres.

That’s the good news for Giants and Sean Manaea fans.

The not-so-good news for Giants and Sean Manaea fans is that he owns a career mark of 0-5 with an atrocious 8.90 ERA against the Dodgers, a career mark of 1-2 with a less-than-stellar 4.79 ERA against the Colorado Rockies, and a career mark of 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA against his new team, the Giants.

Manaea reacts after Mookie Betts homered off of him in the Dodgers 12-1 rout of the Padres at Dodger Stadium on September 3, 2022. Manaea allowed three Dodgers home runs in his 4.1 innings pitched that night. (Marco Jose Sanchez and Kevork Djansezian)

He does, however, have a 4-2 career record and 3.40 ERA against the Arizona Diamondbacks and a career record of 2-1 and 3.22 ERA against his (now) former San Diego Padres teammates … so Giants fans have that going for them.

In other words:

Bring Him On!

Play Ball!
