Boras Targeting One-Year Deal For Bellinger

As is often the case during the so-called ‘Hot Stove Season,’ there are days – and an occasional week – where it is ice cold. But even on those ice cold days, there is usually some MLB news to pass along.

Such was the case on Sunday morning, when The Athletic’s (subscription required) Ken Rosenthal reported (via Twitter) that super-agent Scott Boras, often referred to as ‘Baseball’s Antichrist,’ “…sounds as if he wants (Cody) Bellinger to sign only a one-year deal.”

This, per Rosenthal, from Boras:

“I’ve already been offered multi-years. Most likely, because of his age, we don’t want a multi-year (deal).”

Rosenthal added that, according to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden (also via Twitter), Boras had received calls from at least five teams “…within an hour of him being non-tendered…” by the Dodgers on Friday afternoon, and that “several more have called since.

The obvious point to all of this is that despite his un-Bellinger-like 2022 season offensively during which he slashed .210/.265/.389/.654, there are multiple teams willing to roll the dice on the 2017 NL Rookie of the Year, two-time All-Star, 2018 NLCS MVP, and 2019 MLB MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner … including the Dodgers.

This from MLB.com Dodgers beat writer Juan Toribio, also on Friday:

“The move doesn’t necessarily end Bellinger’s time in Los Angeles. The Dodgers will attempt to bring him back at a lower price, but that will be a tough task. The center fielder is expected to have plenty of suitors. Friedman said the Dodgers explored trading Bellinger before the non-tender deadline, but talks never materialized.”

To be brutally honest, the chances that the extremely popular 27-year-old Scottsdale, AZ native and Dodgers fourth-round draft pick in 2013 out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ will be wearing his number 35 Dodgers jersey in 2023 falls somewhere between slim and none. Then again, it is Andrew Friedman we’re talking about here, and we all know that Friedman has a lengthy reputation for pulling rabbits out of his hat.

Will we see more of this in 2023? Stay tuned…

  1. Ron Cervenka says:

MLB Trade Rumors posted on Monday morning that the Blue Jays “Have Expressed Interest” in signing Bellinger to a one-year deal.

If I was Cody I would go to Colorado. Put up big numbers. Than go free agent

    • Ron Cervenka says:

Agree. Cody’s future in the game will be determined by his 2023 season.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Colorado would be ideal, and with Bellinger roaming in that huge outfield he would be in perfect position for another Gold Glove. A one year deal in Cincinnati and Cody would likely hit 40+ home runs. Houston could pay him one year and play him at first base — Minute Maid is definitely a hitters park, and perhaps the Cheatos find an inventive way to cheat. Cardinals, Phillies, and Marlins could also be interested for one year.
