Angry Dodgers Fans Are Not Going To Like This One

For fans still seething over how Dodgers manager Dave Roberts managed – or mismanaged – his team in their unexpected and embarrassing 5-3 loss to the San Diego Padres in Game-4 of the just-concluded 2022 National League Division Series, and there are many, you are probably not going to like this one.

Much to the dislike of those still-seething Dodgers fans clamoring for Roberts to be fired, and there are many, it was reported by Los Angeles Times Dodgers beat writer Jack Harris (subscription required) on Sunday afternoon that the 50-year-old Naha, Japan native “is expected” to return to the team next season and probably for the duration of his recently re-signed (on March 26, 2022) three-year contract extension, which runs through the 2025 season.

Without question, Roberts’ harshest criticism of how he managed Game-4 of the 2022 NLDS came when he pulled extremely effective Dodgers starting left-hander Tyler Anderson after only five innings and 86 pitches, of which 54 were strikes. Anderson, who had struck out six Padres batters to that point, told reporters postgame “I could’ve gone five more innings. I would’ve thrown 150 pitches if they would’ve let me.” (FS1)

To his credit and what cannot be ignored even after a Division Series in which he was “extremely disappointed,” Roberts has led his team to a likely Hall of Fame-worthy 632-380 record over his seven seasons at the Dodgers helm and, as Harris noted, owns an exceptional .632 winning percentage – the highest in MLB history for managers with at least 315 career games managed at baseball’s highest level.

Over the last decade of disappointing finishes aside from 2020, the common denominator is Roberts.

    • Ron Cervenka says:

I totally get that, but 1-for-21 with RISP from the best team in all of baseball is simply inexcusable and unacceptable.

      • OhioDodger says:

It is unacceptable. Maybe we need to look at changing our batting coaches and batting philosophy. Get rid of the high strike out guys and get some contact guys.

Some of Robert’s decisions cause me to scratch my head in wonder, while others send me over the edge to anger. No doubt that the Dodgers hitters picked a bad time to slump — but the Dodgers would have won this series if Manny Machado was not playing platinum level third base defense while Trea Turner was embarrassing himself at shortstop. Whether Roberts is the right man to be the on-field leader of the Dodgers is certainly open to debate, regardless of his regular season, HOF worthy winning percentage — but more about that in days to come.

    For those who remember.
No way Anderson was coming out of the game if Lasorda was managing.
Tommy lost a couple of tough series in his day, however he won 81 and 88. Leaving Valenzuela in till the ninth with one out. A different era for sure but maybe some lessons could be learned.

In retrospect, it’s easy to say that Anderson should have pitched another inning, but if only Kahnle got out of the 7th, today we would be talking about how the Dodgers have the best bullpen in baseball after Julio mowed them down in game 5. For me though, the biggest error was having so much faith in Kahnle and Treinen who both spent the vast majority of the year on the DL.

    you guys have some short memories;
Tommy managed the team for TWENTY years. took his teams to four WS and lost the first two. he has an .526 winning percentage (.508 in PS).
Roberts was interviewed multiple times before he got the job. the FO wanted kapler and whether they admit it or not, only interviews Roberts as a minority opportunity requirement. he said everything they wanted to hear. AF admitted he was looking for a reason not to hire him and couldn’t find one. they are not going to fire a man whose thinking so closely aligns with their own.
Dave Roberts was CHEATED by alex cora. did they have opportunities? sure, but lets not blame Roberts as if 17 & 18 were outright failures.
the big three struck out in the 9th on ten pitches. Hader was one ball shy of an immaculate inning. is that on Roberts?
Roberts didnt injure muncy, resign cody, or trade for gallo and kimbrel.
i doubt Roberts even has control of the line up. we already know that betts insisted on batting leadoff in front of the fastest man in the game who was also defending a batting title…

Roberts can get some of the blame for mismanaging the pitchers, but the main issue was the lack of hitting. 7 8 and 9 produced very little. only Lux and Barnes really did anything. the offseason was devoted to improving the bench, it didnt happen. Issues

1=trading pollock who we really needed for kimbrel was a disaster.
2=Trading for Gallo??????????????? no sense at all.
3=who would have thought we would lose Buehler

None of the above is Roberts fault.
