Dodgers Re-Sign One Of Their Best Pitchers

Okay, I admit it, that headline is a little (or a lot) misleading. But if you are a pure stat person, it is actually (and factually) correct.

…sort of.

On Friday afternoon, MLB Trade Rumors posted this on Twitter:

Although right-hander Yefry Ramirez finished the 2021 season with a perfect 0.00 Earned Run Average as a Dodger, the 28-year-old Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native, and former Baltimore Oriole and Pittsburgh Pirate appeared in exactly one game in a Dodgers uniform, tossing exactly 2.0 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 1, 2021. He faced a total of six D-backs batters, against whom he made 23 total pitches (16 for strikes), with two strikeouts and one walk in the Dodgers eventual 13-0 rout of the Snakes.

To be fair, 33-year-old right-hander Neftalí Feliz, 26-year-old right-hander Conner Greene, 28-year-old left-hander Andrew Vasquez, and (wait for it…) 37-year-old Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner also finished the 2021 Dodgers campaign without allowing an earned run. Turner pitched 1.0 innings against the Colorado Rockies on August 29, 2021 at Dodger Stadium, allowing two hits to the five Rockies batters he faced, on 10 total pitches, of which nine were strikes, so there’s that.

Dodgers ‘right-hander’ Justin Turner owns a career 0.00 ERA.

As noted in the MLBTR piece by Sean Bavazzano, Ramirez was designated for assignment after his Dodgers debut on August 1, 2021 to make room on the Dodgers roster for “…the ill-fated summer signing of [now 38-year-old left-hander] Cole Hamels.

Barring an over-the-top Spring, Ramirez figures to begin the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City. That said, there is a good chance he will receive a call-up to the Dodgers at some point during the 2022 season.

…if there is a 2022 season, that is.

Play Ball!
