Gordon making strong case for Gold Glove

Baring the unforeseen, Dee Gordon will become the first Dodgers second baseman to be selected to an All-Star Game since Orlando Hudson did so in 2009. There is even an outside chance that he may start at second base for the National League on July 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At last count, Gordon was in second place in the voting behind only perennial Phillies All-Star Chase Utley. But after several unbelievable (if not impossible) defensive plays over the past several weeks there is another term being tossed around with Gordon’s name – Gold Glove.

Although Gordon is currently seventh in fielding percentage (FPCT) in the National League at .983, the difference between first and seventh is only four errors. In the 62 games in which Gordon has played he has committed five errors in 301 total chances. Tops at the position belongs to Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips who is sporting a .996 FPCT, having committed only one error in 281 total chances in the 65 games in which he has appeared. While it is unlikely that Phillips and the others ahead of Gordon will drop much during the second half of the season, it certainly could happen.

On Friday night at Dodger Stadium Gordon made two absolutely brilliant plays at second base helping the Dodgers and staff ace Clayton Kershaw to a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks. After the game Kershaw spoke highly of his soon-to-be-All-Star second baseman.

“I’m proud of him,” said Kershaw. “Just the work ethic that he has, I think he’s a very above average second baseman right now. The range that he has and the plays that he’s making he just looks comfortable. I’ve been spoiled, I’ve had guys like Mark Ellis and Nick Punto at second base and Dee’s making plays that are really really impressive, so it’s a bonus for me.”

Whether or not Gordon wins the 2014 NL Gold Glove at second base remains to be seen but one thing is certain – when Dee Gordon is in the line-up, something exciting will happen.

I don’t know, for sure, but is there only one gold glove winner for each position every year?
The most important thing IMO is that Dee keeps up the good work and helps the Dodgers win.
