In what might very well be a preview to Wednesday’s BBWAA Hall of Fame announcement, the Internet Baseball Writers Association of America (IBWAA) revealed their own 2014 Hall of Fame winners on Monday morning as first-ballot candidates Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas, and second-year candidate Craig Biggio made the cut for the IBWAA Hall of Fame Class of 2014.
Maddux fell just two votes shy of achieving a unanimous 113 out of 113 votes which, for the life of me, I cannot understand. If ever there were a candidate worthy of a unanimous vote, it is ‘The Professor.’ One can only assume that the two Internet writers who failed to vote for Maddux are among those with the ‘nobody’s perfect’ attitude or have a chip on their shoulders against him. That being said, it is highly unlikely that the 600 or so BBWAA members who cast ballots for the actual Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be without a few of these narrow-minded voters as well.
As anticipated, Maddux topped the very formidable field with 111 of 113 votes (98.23%) followed by former teammate Tom Glavine, who collected 100 votes (88.50%). If the same holds true on Thursday, it will be the first time in Hall of Fame history where two teammates and their manager (Bobby Cox) will be enshrined in the same year.
Finishing third in the IBWAA voting was Frank Thomas with 95 votes (84.07%) with Craig Biggio collecting 89 votes (78.76%) to earn the final spot in the IBWAA’s Class of 2014.
Although the selections of Maddux, Glavine, Thomas and Biggio are no surprise, the fact that known PED users Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens came in as high as they did shows that the once hard line stance against PED users seems to be softening. And while I realize that at some point these cheaters will probably make it into the Hall of Fame, there were quite a few guys on this year’s ballot who were (in my opinion) more deserving of votes than Bonds and Clemens.
One of the writers that failed to vote for Maddux, (Mike Petriello), stated that he didn’t put Maddux on his IBWAA ballot because he knew he would be voted in. That limit of ten that he could vote for made him decide to leave him off, because he wanted to get a vote in for an eleventh worthy candidate. I don’t necessarily agree with his position, but can understand the reasoning.
Go figure.
I’m just wondering who Petriello voted for in place of Maddux.
It’s been reported today that Ken Gurnick is not voting Maddux because he links him to the PED ERA. Here’s the link

You just can’t fix stupid !!
When those given the honor and privilege to vote for the highest honor in Major League Baseball choose to make the voting all about themselves instead of the facts and accomplishments, they should have that honor and privilege revoked.
BTW – Gurnick is getting fried on MLB Network Radio and on Twitter.
UPDATE:
Gurnick just said on MLB Network Radio that he will never vote for the Hall of Fame again because “…it would be better if I don’t vote.” He also said that he would not have voted for Mariano Rivera either.
I have come to know and respect Ken, but he is way off on this one.
Thanks to @Think_BlueLA for the @IBWAA shout out last night. http://t.co/C6u5QHxIeZ
I was shocked when I heard this on MLBN. I hope he’s not the only one to not vote for Maddux because this would be a big embarrassment in my opinion and to think it was our own beat writer.
Not bad IBWAA. Maddux, Thomas, Glavine voted in and Biggio almost made it.
