DOTF – July Dodger Pride Award Predictions – Pitchers

(Editor’s Note: We’re trying something new here at ThinkBlueLA.com. Our Dodgers minor league expert Harold Uhlman is predicting which Dodger pitchers and position players will win the July Dodger Pride Award based on his observations and research from ‘Down on the Farm.’ Here are Harold’s picks for the pitchers. Let’s see how he does):

July Dodger Pride Award Predictions – Pitchers

DSL Dodgers

There were a number of young pitchers with the Dominican Summer League Dodgers who may well receive consideration for the July award. Two that got my attention were Francisco Martinez (21) and Kevin Guzman(18). Both pitchers displayed excellent control and the choice was difficult. I selected the older Martinez because he pitched 7 more innings than Guzman and held the opponents to a .194 batting average. He went 3-1 for the month in 26.1 innings giving up 20 hits. Martinez struck out 16 and walked 2.

Arizona League Dodgers

Relievers Jackson Mateo, Wascar Teodo and Lenix Osuna certainly deserve consideration for the Pride Award. However, seventeen year old starter Victor Gonzalez definitely made an impression in July. In 23.1 innings he went 2-1, gave up 14 hits and had an ERA of 2.70. He struck out 29, walked 7 and held opponents to a batting average of .175.

Ogden Raptors

Jacob Rhame

Jacob Rhame

The Raptor choice for the pride Award is also a reliever – the choices being Jacob Rhame and Sawil Gonzalez. I choose Rhame for the award. The 20 year old was the Dodgers sixth round draft pick in 2013. In 8.2 innings in July Rhame gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs and opponents had a .167 batting average against him. He struck out 7 and walked 4.

Great Lakes Loons
The Loons had several excellent candidates for the July award. – Chris Anderson, Tom Windle, Miguel Sulbaran, Craig Stem, Owen Jones and Geoff Brown.

Anderson: 2-0, 22.2 innings, 17 hits, 2 ER, 10 BB, 20K
Windle: 3-0, 27 innings, 23 hits, 5 ER, 7 BB, 24K
Miguel Sulbaran: 4-1, 26.1 innings, 26 hits, 6 ER, 5 BB, 21K
Craig Stem: 9.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4K, 6 saves
Geoff Brown: 3-0 , 20.2 innings, 15 hits, 3 ER, 6 BB, 14K
Owen Jones:10.2 innings, 9 hits, 3 ER, 6 BB, 18K

Sulbaran

Miguel Sulbaran

Miguel Sulbaran is my choice for the Loons Pride Award in a close decision with Anderson and especially Windle. Sulbaran who leads the team in innings pitched in 2013 has gone a bit unnoticed with the two high profile 2013 draft selections joining the Loons. Sulbaran, 19, was signed by the Dodgers as a non drafted free agent in 2011.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes

Jarret Martin

Jarret Martin

The Quakes have struggled on the mound in 2013 standing sixth in the California League in ERA. There are not many choices for the July Pride Award with the Quakes. My selection is Jarret Martin. Although his statistics are not spectacular, I base the choice on his conversion from a starter to a reliever. After a shaky first outing in July, Martin pitched 10 innings giving up 7 hits and two earned runs. He struck out 8 and walked 4.

Chattanooga Lookouts

Yimi Garcia - Tim Evearitt

Yimi Garcia

The Lookouts pitching staff has not been as dominant as was expected when the season opened. The Lookouts are presently in last place 9.5 games behind the Tennessee Smokies. My choice, without hesitation, for the Lookout Pride Award is Yimi Garcia. Garcia, 22, was signed as a non drafted free agent in 2009. Although he had only one save in July, Garcia went 2-0, pitched 10 innings giving up only one hit and no earned runs. He struck out 15 and walked 5.

Albuquerque Isotopes

Matt Palmer

Matt Palmer

Two choices from the Isotopes – Kelvin De La Cruz who has turned his career around as a reliever and Matt Palmer. Palmer gets the nod as the anchor of the Isotope staff. In July he went 2-1 in 26.1 innings. He did give up 27 hits but gave up only 10 earned runs for a 3.18 ERA. He struck out 29 and walked 9.

Quite a bit of movement DOTF this past week. I expect to see Cory Seager at Rancho within the next couple of weeks. He is absolutely destroying Low-A.
