Worst fears realized – Seager out for the season

No catchy headlines, no clever puns or wise cracks. Here is the official press release from the Dodgers PR department:

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers today recalled infielder/outfielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed shortstop Corey Seager on the 10-day disabled list with a right UCL sprain. Seager will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

Valera, 26, will make his second stint with the big league club after making two pinch-hit appearances (0-for-1, BB) with the Dodgers this season. In 17 games with Oklahoma City this year, he has posted a .373 (19-for-51)/.459/.549 slash line with 13 runs, three doubles, two homers and 14 RBI, while also drawing nine walks against just eight strikeouts. The speedy utility man has seen the majority of his playing time at second base (nine games) with the OKC Dodgers, but has also seen time at shortstop (four games), third base (four games) and in left field (one game).

Seager, 24, has hit .267 with 13 runs, five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 13 RBI along with a .348 on-base percentage in 26 games with Los Angeles this season.

The extremely popular Charlotte, North Carolina native and 2016 National League Rookie of the Year explained that he noticed a significant increase in pain in his already sore left elbow this past weekend after a few un-Seager-like throws.

“I had a few bad throws over the weekend and went and got an MRI this morning, and it was necessary to have surgery now,” Seager told SportsNet LA’s Alanna Rizzo. “I was pretty good through spring and I was pretty good through the beginning, and then, like I said, this weekend, I had a few bad throws that really irritated me [physically] and went in and got it looked at and we are where we are. It hurt, had some numbness, and time to go get it looked at.”

It is impossible to fathom the significance of the loss of Seager for the remainder of the season, but in his own words, his team has a “…next-man-up mentality.”

With the news that Seager would be out for the remainder of the season, the young Dodgers shortstop summed it up best and explained what he hopes to do while out of the loop.

“It obviously sucks, support your team as much as possible,” said Seager. “You don’t worry about them, we’ve had problems like this in the past. Next-man-up-mentality and that’s where we go.”

Hang in there Dodger fans, and remember: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”

I was afraid of this back in the Fall when Dodgers and Seager avoided any specifics about the injury/issue with the elbow. It was deja vu all over again with other MLB players who tried to avoid TJ surgery with Platelet Rich Plasma Injections and/or physical therapy but ultimately had surgery. Now the Dodgers will be lucky to have Seager back by 2019 All Star game

Now we’ll see just how strong the Dodger depth is.
