McCarthy thanks Dodgers, teammates and fans

Brandon McCarthy finally broke his silence following his trade the Atlanta Braves last Saturday. By now ever Dodger fan is aware that Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Charlie Culberson and McCarthy were sent to the Braves in exchange for former Dodger Matt Kemp. Details of the trade were included in an article by ThinkBlueLA’s Sarah Morris earlier this week.

Shortly after last Saturday’s blockbuster trade, Culberson and Gonzalez sent out brief statements on Twitter that were very clearly heartfelt and emotional. Both were warmly received and greatly appreciated by Dodger fans from around the globe. It took almost five days for McCarthy to follow suit in today’s breaking social media news-driven world.

McCarthy has always been known for his sarcasm and sass when it comes to Twitter, but his farewell tweet to the Dodgers was unquestionably sincere and genuine. The 12-year MLB veteran is entering a new chapter of his career as his focus shifts to Atlanta, however he took the time to stop and thank the Dodgers for all they have done, including that the Dodgers were wonderful from top to bottom. Amid these big blockbuster trades, it is easy to forget all of the people that play different roles throughout the organization. Mentioning them all was a class act by the right-hander. Moments later, McCarthy also posted a tweet that will hopefully endear him with new fans in Atlanta.

Perhaps my favorite part about McCarthy’s tweet was Joc Pederson’s response. Pederson asked who he was supposed to beat up in fantasy football now and followed it up with a hashtag that said “didn’t this happen a week ago?” There was no letting McCarthy off the hook for wishing the Dodgers well four days after the trade was actually announced.

McCarthy is turning the page and starting a new chapter with the Atlanta Braves as he enters his thirteenth year in the big leagues. In 2017 Mac appeared in 19 games with the Dodgers, posting a record of 6-4 with an ERA of 3.98. Unfortunately for the 6′-7″ / 235-pound right-hander, the 2017 season was also filled with a variety of injuries for the veteran. In May he was placed on the disabled list with left shoulder soreness. Just one short month later, McCarthy made another disabled list appearance this time for ten days with right knee tendinitis. But just when things were beginning to look up, McCarthy was once again sidelined on July 21 with a blister on his right index finger. Unfortunately, that 10-day DL stint ended up becoming a prolonged trip on the 60-day disabled list.

After several few rehab trips to the minors and finally on October 24, McCarthy was reactivated to the Dodgers roster … just in time for Game-1 of the 2017 World Series. Needless to say, 2017 was not the best year for McCarthy by any means, much of it was spent frustratingly trying to get healthy again. But through it all he seemed to remain positive continued to show his support for his team the best he could.

Trades and change are not foreign to McCarthy by any means. The 34-year-old will be joining his sixth major league team in Atlanta. But at the end of the day and despite being a White Sox, Ranger, Athletic, Diamondback and Yankee, McCarthy still considered dressing in Dodger Blue to be one his greatest honors. As the Dodgers and McCarthy part ways, we wish him nothing but the best in with his new team in Atlanta.

May his tweets remain sarcastic and sassy through it all.

I don’t know, maybe it’s experience, but it doesn’t feel as bad as it use to when players leave the team. I guess you grow to expect it. This deal looks like a good one, getting them down under the luxury tax level. It looks like they’re getting ready to spend big soon.
