Joe Davis has first Vin Scully moment

When it was announced that 2016 would be Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully’s final season as the voice of the Dodgers after 67 glorious seasons that spanned the lives of nearly every living Dodger fan, it was devastating news. After all, this is the man who not only called most of the greatest moments in Dodgers history but was also our personal history teacher and our very dear friend. But to the credit of Lon Rosen, the Dodgers executive vice president and chief marketing officer, the Dodgers somehow managed to lure 29-year-old Joe Davis – the man that many are already calling ‘the next Vin Scully’ – away from Fox Sports to fill Scully’s now-vacant seat in the appropriately named Vin Scully Press Box.

Before I continue I must caution you that even though Davis does not have a mean bone in his body, he loathes being referred to as the next Vin Scully. This most certainly isn’t because he doesn’t aspire to become as successful and as popular as his Hall of Fame predecessor, it is because, like all of us, his respect for the G.O.A.T. – greatest of all time – is insurmountable and he knows that no one, not even the most popular up-and-comer such as himself, will ever be able to replace Vin … and he doesn’t even want to try.

Although Joe Davis is honored to take over for Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, he is adamant that he will never replace the greatest broadcaster of all time. (Photo credit – Jon SooHoo)

However, one of the things that made the great Vin Scully… well… great, was his ability to say exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment and did so spontaneously and without rehearsal.

Joe Davis has arrived.

During Thursday night’s epic ninth-inning come-from-behind (by four runs, mind you) 5-4 win over the NL West second-place Arizona Diamondbacks, Davis had what can only be described as a Vin Scully moment.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, and with the Dodgers having already received four – yes four – walks (one intentional) off of Dbacks closer Fernando Rodney, Dodgers rock star utility infielder / outfielder Chris Taylor, who was already 3-for-4 on the night with two doubles and a single, lined a sharp single to left off of Dbacks left-hander T.J. McFarland to give the Dodgers their 22nd come-from-behind win of the season.

“Lined to left field. Moment after moment, memory after memory, the Dodgers have done it again!”

If that isn’t a Vin Scully moment, nothing is.

Great call, Joe Davis!

No doubt about it. If you had asked me who made that call, without knowing when it was made, I would have said it is without any doubt a Vin call.

I love Joe and he seems to love being here so hopefully it will be a long time before we have to talk about joe’s replacement. That was a great call by him last night.

I commented to my wife that it was something Vinny would have said. Very good blog, Ron.

The more I hear him the better I like him.

Joe Davis is no Vin Scully, but he does do an outstanding Joe Davis impersonation.

    He’s a keeper!
