When you are a first round draft pick and pitching in your first game at a new level of the minor leagues, and Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, Vice President of Player Development De Jon Watson and Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda are in the house, this is called pressure.Unfortunately, right-hander Chris Anderson did not handle the pressure well as the Quakes dropped their season opener to the San Jose Giants 7-1 before a crowd of 3,439 at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga.
Anderson was roughed up for three runs on three hits, walked two, hit a batter, and never made it out of the first inning. By the time reliever Freddie Cabrera came in to retire the side with a strike out, the game was, for all intents and purposes, over.
Whereas Anderson struggled mightily, Giants starter Chris Stratton was brilliant, allowing one run on only two hits while walking two and striking out four in his five innings of work. The one run came on a monster solo home run by Quakes first baseman Chris Jacobs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Jacobs also smashed a double in the 7th inning and ended the night with two of the Quakes four hits. The other two hits, both singles, were by left fielder Robbie Garvey and third baseman Steven Proscia respectively.
Cabrera pitched 3.1 strong innings allowing no runs and only two hits in relief of Anderson. Unfortunately left-hander Dan Coulombe and right-hander Luis Mesa didn’t fair as well allowing three and one runs respectively to a very good hitting Giants team.
Giants catcher Ben Turner had a huge night at the plate going 2 for 4 with three RBI’s. Right fielder Charles Jones hit a tremendous home run to left field the probably traveled more than 420 feet.
The two teams face each other again tonight at LoanMart Field with rehabbing Dodger Josh Beckett getting the start for the Quakes. Beckett is expected to go five innings and will be replaced my 17-year-old Mexican phenom lefty Julio Urias who is expected to pitch three innings.
