Down on the Farm – Quakes Finish Road Trip with 4-Game Winning Streak

After losing their first two games to the Lancaster JetHawks (Astros) to begin a six-game road trip, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes bounced back to win their next four straight games. Led by excellent relief pitching and a dominating show of home run power off the bats of C.J. Retherford (6), Michael Pericht (2), Chris Jacobs (2), Jonathan Garcia (2), Austin Gallagher (1) and Scott Wingo (1), the Quakes finished the long distance road trip with a 4-2 record. The 14 home runs in six games is quite possibly a new Quakes record with almost half of them hit by third baseman C.J. Retherford. The 26-year-old Homestead, FL native is now hitting .318 on the season and leads the team with 11 home runs and 46 RBIs.

Quakes third baseman C.J. Retherford led the team with six home runs during the recently concluded six-game road trip.

The Quakes ended the road trip with their first series sweep of 2012 by taking all three from the powerful Stockton Ports (A’s) Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights with nail-biting scores of 3-2, 3-2 and 5-4 respectively. The 4-2 road trip also moves the Quakes over the .500 mark for the first time this season and sets the stage for a huge weekend series with the Cal League-South leading High Desert Mavericks (Mariners) at the Rancho Cucamonga Epicenter. The Mavs currently have a two-game lead over the surging Quakes.

Quakes manager Juan Bustabad congratulates Michael Pericht on one of his two home runs during the road trip.

In the series finale on Thursday night, top Dodger pitching prospect Zach Lee started for the Quakes and threw four scoreless innings allowing only 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking one. Zee is coming off a recent groin injury which is why he was pulled before going the required five innings needed for the win. Quakes reliever Steve Smith came on in relief of Lee and pitched two innings allowing 4 runs (one earned) on 3 hits to go 3-0 on the season. Ryan Acosta followed with two scoreless innings and Eric Eadington notched his sixth save of the season with a scoreless 9th.

That’s an awesome display of power. I have been following Garcia after his hot first half with the Loons last year. Good to see him getting it together. He is still very young.

Looks like Lee is also getting it together. Hopefully no more injuries so he can get stretched out.

I listen to some Quake games but they are in the same time zone as the Dodgers, games past my bed time.

Ron, I’m thinking it might be time for a TBLA night at a Quakes game !!
