One Down, One+ To Go

When it was announced on social media late Friday morning that the Dodgers had re-signed 29-year-old utility infielder / outfielder and 2024 postseason hero Tommy Edman to a well-deserved five-year / $74 million contract extension, a collective sigh of relief could be heard throughout the streets of Southern California and from behind computer screens everywhere … except San Francisco, San Diego, Arizona, and Colorado, of course. This from Dodgers beat write Juan Toribio:

“Edman and the Dodgers agreed to a five-year, $74 million extension, the club announced on Friday. Multiple sources confirmed to MLB.com that the deal runs through the 2029 season with a club option in ’30. Edman, who had been signed through 2025 with a two-year, $16.5 million deal from the Cardinals, will receive a $17 million signing bonus.”

Edman slashed a ridiculous .407/.393/.630/1.022 in the six 2024 NLCS games against the New York Mets to earn Series MVP honors. (Robert Gauthier)

That’s the good news.

The less-than-good-news – at least as of this writing – is that extremely popular 32-year-old Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández remains unsigned.

Although Teo finished the 2024 regular season with a solid .272/.339/.501/.840 slashline, he went an alien-like 15-for-50 (.300) in the 16 2024 postseason games in which he apperred, with eight runs, 12 RBIs, two home runs, one double, one stolen base, 10 walks, and 15 strikeouts. (SportsNet LA)

So, too, does the other popular Hernández – Kiké, causing a little anxiety among Dodgers fans.

In his 14 2024 postseason games, Kiké went 15-for-51 (.294), with 11 runs, six RBIs, one home run, four walks, and 11 strikeouts. He also stole four bases while being caught once.

But as they (whoever ‘they’ are) say: It’s still early.

I hope the Dodgers can get a deal done with Teo. I would also like to see them work out a Taylor and prospect(s) trade for Bellinger in a mutual salary dump.
