During his 10-year MLB career, 35-year-old former St. Louis Cardinal, Tampa Bay Ray, San Diego Padre, Arizona Diamondback, New York Met, Cincinnati Red, and Boston Red Sox outfielder Tommy Pham has been somewhat of an annoyance for Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman‘s team.
Although the Las Vegas, NV native and 16th-round draft pick in 2006 out of Durango High School in Las Vegas owns a mediocre career slash line of .259/.351/.435/.786 and a less-than mediocre slash line of .170/.251/.287/.538 slash line against the Dodgers, he hit four home runs, eight doubles, and drove in 18 runs in his combined 54 games (191 plate appearances) against Friedman’s team.
Not exactly overwhelming numbers and most certainly not the kind of numbers that would put the soon-to-be (on March 8) 36-year-old left fielder on the Dodgers – or anyone’s – radar, right?
Wrong.
On Saturday morning, MLB Trade Rumors reported that according to MLB.com and Dodgers.com popular beat writer Juan Toribio:
“Tommy Pham could be one of Dodgers’ targets as the team looks for a right-handed hitting outfielder.”
The MLB Trade Rumors piece added:
“The L.A. lineup is heavy on left-handed batters overall, and another righty bat might be needed in the outfield in particular with James Outman and Jason Heyward slated for the bulk of at-bats in center and right field. Chris Taylor and Manuel Margot (both righty swingers) will be in the mix for left field work and, in Margot’s case, more of a general backup role. Prospect Miguel Vargas will also get a look in left field, yet adding a more proven bat to this group would only enhance what is already a loaded Dodgers roster.“
Toribio also noted that Pham:
“…has been on the Dodgers’ radar before and would come at a lower cost than another rumored Los Angeles target in Teoscar Hernandez.”
According to an October 29, 2023 article by LA Times Dodgers beat writer Jorge Castillo, Pham:
“…pushed hard to become a Dodger over the last 12 months (and) twice he asked his agent to call Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers last offseason to see about coming together on a free agent contract.”
Didn’t happen.
Instead, Pham accepted a one-year/$6 million deal with the Mets, this despite reports that Dodgers outfielders Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez had “vouched for him.”
Stay tuned…

Two words: Teoscar Hernandez.
Two words: spot on!
Two words: Done Deal!
Pham is solid and very affordable. Would be a solid addition. Probably 10-15 mil per yr less than teoscar H. Less yrs as well.
I am not a fan of Pham. Slapping Joc Pederson was childish and he has quickly worn out his welcome with recent teams. Dodgers should not take a chance of disrupting clubhouse chemistry with Pham.
Didn’t know those things about Pham.
Why bring a cancer to the clubhouse.
Bring Kike back!
dodgers signed T Hernandez last night for 1 yr 23.5 mil but money differed.
Good addition for Dodgers middle of lineup
with this offense i think we could easily get away with a 6 man staff-
Yam Buehler Miller Glasnow Sheehan Grove or rotate the 6th guy.
with these manipulated / differed deal can the dodgers get Hader for 5 yrs 105
and defer 10 mil a yr???
KC Royals Championship style pen
Graterol Phillips Hader
with Treinin Hudson Ferguson and more.
I believe 6 man rotation will be SOP for Dodgers. Hader? Hard to see Dodgers making that type of commitment to any reliever. Perhaps a trade for Bednar from Pirates?
Go Padres
