In his season debut this past Saturday, Dodgers left-handed ace and future Hall of famer Clayton Kershaw allowed only one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in his 6.0 innings of work. That lone run was a second-inning solo home run by Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker in the Dodgers 10-1 rout of Arizona at Dodgers Stadium.

But there is another ace in the Dodgers 2023 starting rotation – 26-year-old fellow left-hander Julio Urías.

In his (now) two 2023 starts, the hard-throwing Culiacan, Mexico native is an MLB-best 2-0, having allowed two runs and nine hits in his thus far 12.0 innings pitched, for an excellent 1.50 ERA. Along the way, Urías has struck out a National League-best 12 opposing batters, while walking none.

In his 6.0 innings pitched against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night, Urías allowed no runs on five hits, with six strikeouts, while walking none.

Do you see a pattern here?

“I thought he was really good. Bailed us out of some innings, making pitches, and I thought his mix was really consistent,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after his team’s 5-2 win over the Colorado Rockies in front of a sold-out Dodger Stadium crowd of 52,290 on Tuesday night. “I thought his first start, it took him a few innings to kind of figure out the fastball. But I thought tonight he was really crisp, and again, when we needed him to make pitches, he did, and a really quality outing.”

Having more than one ace in your starting rotation is a wonderful problem to have.
