As expected, 26-year-old Dodgers left-hander Julio Urías has been named as one of three finalists for the 2022 National League Cy Young Award, along with 27-year-old Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara and 28-year-old Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried. The announcement came on Monday afternoon via Twitter.
Urías finished the 2022 regular season with an MLB third-best 17-7 record (tied with Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez), and an MLB second-best 2.16 ERA behind only 39-year-old (that’s not a typo) Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander‘s ridiculous 1.75 ERA. The hard-throwing Culiacan, Mexico native also struck out 166 opposing hitters while allowing only 23 home runs in his 175.0 regular season innings pitched.
The winner of MLB’s most prestigious pitching award, as voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA), will be announced on Wednesday, November 16.
Also under the “as expected” category, 50-year-old Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was named as one of three finalists for 2022 National League Manager of the Year on Monday afternoon, along with Buck Showalter, who won 101 games in his first season as manager of the New York Mets, and seven-year Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker, who also won 101 games and won the NL East Division by virtue of winning the season series10-9 over Showalter’s Mets. Roberts led his team to an MLB-best 111-51 record in 2022.
Roberts has received votes for Manager of the Year in all seven seasons as the Dodgers manager, winning the award in 2016, his first season as the team’s skipper. However, this is the first time Roberts finished in the top three in voting since 2017, when he finished second to Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo for the trophy.
The 2022 Manager of the Year Award for both leagues, also voted on by the BBWAA, will be announced on Tuesday, November 15.
