Best Quote of the Season?

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then a player says something during an interview that makes you smile … and nod in agreement.

Such a quote happened on Friday afternoon prior to the Dodgers first NLDS workout and subsequent intersquad game at Dodger Stadium.

As popular Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was suiting up, he was suddenly ambushed by a (large) hoard of media-types with recorders recording and video camera lights blazing, whom he graciously accommodated.

Among the questions asked of the 33-year-old Villa Park, CA native, six-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner, 2020 National League MVP, 2021 World Series Champion, and veteran of (to this point) 42 postseason games was: “What have you learned about the postseason over the years?”

“Whoever’s hot, it really is,” Freeman answered succinctly. He then added “I mean, we (the Atlanta Braves) won 88 games last year and won the World Series, but we were hot for two months going into it.

“It’s usually good pitching and home runs; that’s usually how that works. I think that’s kind of how today’s been going, too.”

And now for the great quote:

“It’s usually the base hit and the two-run home run, and then it happens again two innings later.”

Admit it – you just smiled … and nodded in agreement, didn’t you?

“It’s very very hard to string multiple hits together because every team that’s in the playoffs usually has really good pitching, so whoever can keep ’em down and get the big home run,” Freeman added.

You’ll never guess who hit a two-run home run in that aforementioned intersquad game.

Although there was no @DingerTracker to tell us how far Freeman’s blast travelled into the Right Field Pavilion, it was an absolute no-doubter that was probably close to 400 feet.

Dodgers fans will gladly take “…the base hit and the two-run home run…” all day, every day, and will do so with a smileand a nod.

Play Ball!
