The Dodgers have a well-earned reputation for acquiring under-appreciated talent to enhance the organization. Fans are well aware of the under-the-radar players who have become key members of the roster over the last several years: position players Max Muncy, Chris Taylor, and Justin Turner, along with relievers Phil Bickford and Alex Vesia.
With little fanfare, the Dodgers have added yet another talent to the organization. Oh, he will not directly impact the results of any game, fans will not find his contributions in box scores or on the stat pages, but the Dodgers have found another gem whose talent will be appreciated by fans – Dontrell Wayne Willis.
Baseball fans will remember ‘D-Train‘ as a journeyman Major League pitcher from 2003 through 2011 who competed with a flair that was uncommon amongst his peers. Now, the 40-year-old Willis has added a refreshing, professional perspective to the Dodgers SportsNet LA television broadcasts, perfectly complementing the nationally acclaimed Joe Davis. There appears to be an on-air chemistry between Willis and Davis that flows with the right blend of analytics, storytelling, and repartee that makes their broadcasts special.
No offense intended to the other analysts and on-air talent recently added to the Dodgers family, but If the organization was holding tryouts for the perfect Joe Davis traveling broadcast partner, the competition is decidedly one-sided – Dontrelle Willis is the winner and a long-term KEEPER!
